Throttle linkage & tranny shifting issues

My transmission has started shifting funny, and now is basically skipping second gear and going almost directly from first to third, and seems to go into neutral while trying to do the 2-3 shift. Only stays in 2nd gear for literally one second. TiminVA told me to check the throttle linkage next to the tranny, and when I touched the end of the throttle cable, with the white plastic fitting on it, the whole assembly fell off it's bracket and was dangling by the little spring. I put it all back together, but it needs to be adjusted, or tightened. Tim said the throttle cables stretch after a while. Can somone kinda walk me through how you go about tightening up the cable, from under the truck, drivers side, at the side of the tranny?
