It's so much easier making HP when you don't have to worry about how it will act with 25K behind it, or if it will melt down with that hired man in there climbing a hill

I know why you're doing it the way you are, and I can appreciate that...but at the same time, I'm glad I moved on to a new approach!

Is that weight truck included? How bout a 13k trailer.? Im currently running a 60/12 and have high egts at wot while pulling but thought it was due to the smaller compressor housing. Should have got a 14 but love the lower spoolup at the track.

S300's are tougher...if you wan't a S300 class, HX40 sized charger, go with a Super B/HTBG. You won't lose "much" spoolup if any, and it will cool better than any HX35 regardless of compressor wheel. I ran one for a while and was extremely impressed!

I wouldn't do that Eric...unless you fail miserably

I can't really say...I wouldn't think a charger built for nitrous would work for the towing crowd!

Usually, I list Gross Weight...the heaviest I have been was 38-39K Gross!
13K would be a warmup for my old truck...but you still know it's there!

Do you have to run WOT while towing? EGT's on a 12v are almost always controlled by your right foot

Chris,

Here's one for you!! My truck mods are listed below:

4" turbo back straight piped, AFE intake, 370 injectors, laser cut DV's, timing bumped, Number 6 plate in the stock position and the arm adjusted. I am running an HX-40/16.Oh, and a tranny with upgraded clutches. 6 in the direct drum, 5 in the low drum, and 6 overdrive. And a little billet here and there!!

The truck runs great, I tow at 15-16K with no problems, the only issue I have is full throttle runs or burnouts. I can see 1600-1700*F without much trouble. I have been considering an HTT killer "B" in the 64/14 configuration. Any comments??

No I usally hold it to 2500 and the egts stay around 1050 while pulling 6%. That extra 500 rps would be nice though thats why I'm thinking of water meth.

It will surge when towing unless you run in 3rd...at least every other 64mm charger I've played with has! If you can deal with that, I'd say it should cool it down fairly well. My GT4088R (63.5mm/.85A/R) runs great on the top end, but surges a bit going into OD...I think my 35's and 3.55's are aggrevating this more than normal

Water/meth is a good choice for using a smaller charger...I've never used it, but I've never heard anything really bad about it either! Use more water for EGT relief, say an 80/20 mix

Do you guys think I'm some kind of turbo Guru or something...my ignorance has caused me to try lots of chargers. I wish I could have just bought the right one first, but with a 12v there are TONS of varialbes that contribute to how good a certain charger runs over another!

Glad to be of any help I can be though!

Chris, define surge--Practical experience is worth more than book smarts!! To be honest, I am gonna learn from your "expensive" mistakes!!! Sorry!!! So are you running twins right now?

Nope, no twins...GT4088R on the 98, going back to stock (or close) on the 95! It's a shop truck now

Surge...I assume you know what "bark" is? Surge is a bark that happens when your still on the pedal. Basically, with an Auto, it will happen with a bigger charger when the tranny shifts from 3rd to 4th locked, or locks the converter in 4th.

It happens when the boost is "high" and the engine speed drops...the engine can't take in all the air that the charger is pushing. Usually you can drive around it by keeping in the pedal while it locks up in OD!

BTW, this is worse with 12v's than any other Cummins...because of the crappy head flow!

Make sense?
Chris

BTW, twins don't usually have this problem since it's splitting the load between 2 chargers...even though they push the same volume of air, the top charger is working half as hard, so it would take twice the effort to "surge"it. This isn't scientific, but it has held true for me!

What exactly is that GT turbo you have? Have you tried porting the cylinder head?

Is that a direct bolt on? Where did you buy it? Is that the T-3 flange at the exhaust manifold?

Bolt on.

Nope...took me and a buddy about 15-20hrs of fabricating the wastegate spacer, downpipe, wastegate plumbing, oil and coolant hose, etc!

I bought it off Ebay

Uses a t4 inlet flange...as it worked out, Joe Hellman had a ATS manifold he welded a T4 flange on that I happened to acquire, so that was a big help

So now it is "Chris the Turbo GURU"!!! Is a 62/14 not a good upgrade for the stocker? From everything I've read it seems to be the best. There doesn't seem to be much preference on whether PS or HTB2 though. I'm needing a new one and just curious, dang side play!!
