Thinking about messing up truck, Help please.
I've been reading the massive amount of info here. Before that I knew absolutely nothing.
I've had my truck a couple years now. Finally getting around to getting some stuff done to it. Just got a new 7 ton bumber pull for logs that I won't load more than 8k on probably. Lots of mountain driving around Denver. Fully stock right now with 70k on it.
I'm fairly sure I'm gonna start with A Commander for EGT, Trans, and Boost on the pillar. A mechanical black PRICOL OPTIX hopefully on the steering column if that will work and an Edge EZ.
After that I guess my main question about general modding theory is: Do you pretty much upgrade stuff to match what your chip is gonna do or can you add mods with the same chip on same setting and get anything noticable?
I.E. With just an EZ is it worth considering getting the j-bolt for the wastegate, 4" exhaust, new intake, injectors, etc.? Keep in mind I didn't know what a wastegate, injectors or intake really was untill I came here. I could have alot of stuff wrong.
I'm thinking about trying out that BHAF thing with a prefilter so it at least sounds like I did something. Depending on how that goes maybe risk rendering my turbo inopperative by attemting to remove the silencer ring.
I would go with the j-bolt instead of that 2 hook thing to keep PSI at around 30, right? BTW doesnt clamping something down that really wants to move make it mad and wanna break?
About exhaust. 4" means what, 4" diameter through the entire length or just at the tail end? What do I have stock now, the tail pipe looks wide enough to be 4". Just how loud is a "straight pipe"? Would I start getting noise ordinance tickets? What is a "straight pipe", is that just taking out the muffler replacing it with pipe?
Well this is getting long, I'll stop now.
Thanks

Being I'm close to you in the Springs just south I'll help with some but not all.
With an EZ, I have one, you will like the j-hook or you can use a turnbuckle and manually lock the wastegate shut. Myself I went the j-hook rout so I can keep the turbo below 30psi. With the EZ I see noticeable power increases but annoying smoke if your hard off the line. It's tolerable but altitude with fuel is going to cause smoke.
Your exhaust question. I believe, could be wrong, but think it's a 3" and a 4" tip at the end. A 4" exhaust will give some benefits egt wise but without a resonator or muffler causes drone at certain rpms and will get annoying on long trips.
A BHAF will only help, as I've read, but I'm yet to make that mod but also I've read a 2nd gen air box is good to ~350-400HP so I haven't done anything yet and I can get 30lbs boost at will.
I don't know your trans but if auto you might consider a VB and Converter upgrade as well, plenty of reading on that topic. The 47re if left stock will work well for years but start throwing fuel/timing at the engine the converter is going to go sooner or later taking out the rest of the trans (worst case) I caught mine just in time and got away cheep with a input shaft, converter, VB and a few other parts.
Stay tuned others will report.

How good is your transmission? No bigger than the edge ez for power adders. You could run a bit larger injector like the RV275. I've pulled 10k with 90rwhp injectors and a comp box, but I needed a converter and valve body. Down side to what I did was my head life dropped some (higher egt's), black/brown turbo burnout. I would close that turbo wastegate completely if you gonna mod a HY-35 auto truck. Run a larger exhaust around 5in and large stacks are cool. Welcome to bombing

I'd wire or J-hook the HY35 wastegate completely closed.
Normally that turbo is a detriment to performance, but in thin air it's nice to have.
The Edge EZ works pretty well, but I'd recommend running it at the lowest level of aggressiveness (you can change an internal jumper to one of three settings-- it comes on the most aggressive rate, and you just need to move it to the other end). I have pics of the inside of an EZ in my gallery.
IMO, the EZ advances the timing a little too much, but you're not pulling enough weight to where this matters any.
Do yourself a favor and say mild with the modifications. I would do the EZ on the mildest setting and a set of RV injectors. This will give you around 300hp at the wheels (compared to the 210 or so you have now) and should still perform well in thin air.
Limit your turbo to 32psi because it's spinning too fast above that point-- especially in thin air! 32psi in Denver represents a lot more shaft rpm than 32psi at sea level.
