I think that I am going to buy the Edge JWA over the smarty but the only thing that would concern me is tapping the VP. I just recently replaced it. I would be pi$$ed off if the pump goes bad after I tap since it is new.

My question is what are the chances of it going bad, also how hard is it to tap?

If you are going to buy a performance chip like Edge I think you should tap it.
Go to Blue Chip Diesel and look at the pump cover. It will let you tap the pump without showing any signs of a pierced wire, and the thought is if the pump goes bad it can be returned with no problems. Plus there is some good reading on the vp-44.

Is the pump cover just a cover or does it include some type of wire and or harness?

I don't think tapping the wire is assurance of VP failure any more than NOT tapping will guarantee VP health.

VPs die for all kinds of reasons. There's no reason to avoid tapping the wire based on that fear.

My VP died (untapped) at 40K miles.

Hohn is right. A crappy VP44 will die wether you tap the pump or not. So you may as well just tap it and enjoy it. I've seen them die bone stock with less than 30k, and I've seen plenty of pumps live to 200k that have been tapped their whole life.
Just make sure you have a good healthy lift pump system and you should be okay.

I don't like those pump covers. They use a very tiny pin ***** method of stabbing into a circut board. Nothing is more positive and solid that just soldering your wire to the pump wire.

dont tap it unless you have the money to replace the vp more frequently, i decided its too expensive to be playing with. its common sense, you add strain to an injection pump it shortens the life. the reason those pumps go out at 30k is because the lp goes out, i would advise relocating the lift pump to the frame rail and getting a smarty. one other thing is your auto trans will not last long with an edge juice tapped unless you avoid Tc slipping. just my 2 cents

Like smokinstrokes said its the lift pump that goes out and takes the injection pump with it. Tap it, you wont have to replace it more frequently unless the lift pump goes.

Everyone is deathly afraid of VP failure. If you do some research you will find about 80% of VP failures are electrical related, not necessarily mechanical. I just had my VP replaced and it has a wire tap already. The P0216 code is Timing Circuit malfunction, not VP malfunction. The electronics get hot where they are located. Supposedly the newer (rebuilt) pumps address this issue a little better. Tap that sucker and live a little.

i'm waiting to beef up my tranny first then I'll tap it no use if I cant get the power to the ground properly, & oh I'll hook up my edge comp too while I'm add it

yea get a nice fueling system (my 2 holleys work great and pretty cheap too) and tap it. long as ya got planety of fuel to it ya oughta be fine

I know a wire tap voids the warranty, but does it deem the core non-serviceable? In other words if you tap the wire, can you still return the pump as a good core and get your core charge back?
