Taking the cat off the exhaust

While under my truck the other day, I got the idea that maybe I should consider taking the cat off my truck. It's an 02. It looks like the cat is just clamped onto the rest of the exhaust pipe. Can I just take those clamps off, remove the cat, and replace that section with pipe? Will this make the truck run any better? (cooler, better mpg, more power, etc)

Thanks.

I think ur seeing the resonator thing. I had one right before the muffler, and took it out. You won't see any performence increase, maybe egt's a bit lower but not alot.

Yep my resonator got lost when I went to 4" exhaust, straight thru muffler. Not much louder that stock.
