Synthetic oil--
After reading about amsoil and Schaeffer oil on this site, I have a question. My truck in the sig has 170k on it every mile of which was conventional oil. If i switch over, isn't there a deal where a whole bunch of crud can be expected to jam up the filter on the first oil change? Do you switch over then change oil and filter again in a couple thousand miles for the first time? i want to use synthetics because it seems it would be easier on cold weather starts.

If you've been doing regular oil changes using a modern, (last 30 years), multi grade diesel oil, you shouldn't have any strange buildup to worry about.

Synthetics don't have more detergent additive package... just, on average, a higher quality and longer lasting one.

OK, you will see some benefits from synthetic oils... i'm in MO & bought my truck used & switched to syn at first oil change... i did notice some benefits... as said prior, amsoil has a "cleaner" not sure their exact description, however, i just switched to the syn... mine had ~70k on it... i also do extended oil changes after the 1st change to allow any "crud" etc that may have been loosened up in the process
just my $0.02
just my $0.02
