Supplemental Backup lights
Has anyone come up with some decent supplemental backup lights that might attach to the towing hitch and uses the trailer lighting plug or some other usable configuration? I always back up (and I do mean "up" my driveway when returning from work and our stock backup lights are totally inadequate. I've heard about "white night" (I think that's it's name) and vaguely remember some disparaging remarks about it. I'd like to make it a permanent installation but as Top has so succinctly pointed out, I'll need instructions written in crayon to get it right. <br><br>~Dave

I have a set of 55w Halogens that came with mounting brackets to fit a trailer hitch. They can be wired up to a switch or using a relay triggered of of the factory lights.

What Ryan said. I have a set of PIAA 40's on mine. It's like headlights in reverse! ;D I used the PIAA relay whose coil is activated by the stock backup lights. I tapped into the healthy-sized 12V constant hot wire on the round connector to power the lights. That wire can easily can easily handle the load.

Wiring Code 7 way Truck End # Color Gage Circuit Function connector interior <br>1 Black or Red 10 12v <br>2 Green 14 Right turn <br>3 Blue 12 Electric Brake <br>4 White 10 Ground <br>5 Small Yellow 14 Left Turn <br>6 Brown 14 Running lights<br> <br>7 Yellow 10 Auxiliary 12v <br>NOTE: #7 is the center terminal and currently is most commonly used for backup lights. <br><br>Well, round plug diagram didn't come out, but you're saying that you used either pin 7, yellow 10 gage or pin 1 hot 12v? Then you just run a wire over to backup lights to activate the relay? I like the idea of PIAA 40's. Reverse headlights even better.<br><br>~Dave

I bought several sets of driving lights that I mounted on the back of my truck, boat trailer and camper. Using the center wire for the power and switched relay that is activated from the dash.<br> Each set is halogens and when I get that moron with the brights on my behind I accidently flip the switch ;D<br> Works great for backing up my long driveway at 3 am with 35 ft of trailer back there!

But, the idea sure is tempting, especially day before yesterday. Idiot doing 55 in left lane when the rest of the world is 75 and running brights for everyone who passes on the right and swings back to the left. One day, someones going to educate and unfortunately probably cause her to have an accident. <br><br>Well, I found some PIAA 40's and they are not cheap. I'll have to put them on to get list. Bought a cheapie for now. At least the wiring will be in place when I upgrade.<br><br>~Dave

Re:Supplemental Backup lights
I have $10/each rubber tractor lights mounted to the underside of the rear bumper. There's a bolt on each side of the bottom of the bumper just outboard of either end of the hitch that is bolted to nothing at all--pulled that out, replaced it with a stainless button-head for the bracket, then wired it up. Huge improvement over the teeny-tiny stock backup lights (with smoked lenses?! ???). The stock backup light wire that I tapped for the relay was purple with a black stripe on both my 98 1500 and the 02 2500.

Re:Supplemental Backup lights
Dave, try this place. They had the absolute best price I could find anywhere. Had no problems dealing with them. They're on close-out, so it looks like they're dropping that model. 89 bucks and free shipping!

I have 2 Hella 90601 work lights mounted under the bumper. Each light has 2 55-watt bulbs. I changed the stock back-up lights to turn signals.

Re:Supplemental Backup lights
I originally installed relay controlled fog lights as backups. They were ok but didn't provide even lighting. I replaced them with some tractor rear 55 watt halogen flood lights from Tractor Supply. They really light up the night!<br><br>Gene

Re:Supplemental Backup lights
I've got a very cheap fog light under the bumper- driven by a relay under the hood. The main advantage ist that they come in packages of 2 for about 7US$. <br>Since they are mounted under the bumper i tend to loose them. I contemplate installing 2 lights into the bumper. Has anybody done this? <br><br>AlpineRAM
