Straight-pipe vs. stacks

What could I expect in terms of difference in sound between the following two exhaust setups:

1. 5" straight to 6" miter cut stacks
2. 5" straight rear exit

Which will sound better? Which is louder? Right now, I've got a straightpiped stock system, but am looking at options for when I go to twins (planning waaaaay ahead ahaha).

Will the 'coolness factor' of the stacks make up for losing the ability to blow smoke at tailgater level?

Pro's to doing both, but I voted stacks just 'cause!

Although pulling a 007 and smoking someone off your rear has its place in the natural order of things!

Do you really need 5" why not 4" to 6" stacks? 4 to 5 is a big diff. Y you dont want to have to much back presure. it your set on 5" then i voted for the stacks.

Chris,
First, stacks are a better match for a dually. It just fits
Is yours a dually???
Second, if not definitely go with the straight pipe and the mitered pipe out the side. There simply is no substitute when someone gives you the bird and you can actually retaliate with smoke in their car. Get your smoke turned up!!!!!

I had a 5" straight-piped Big Exhaust system w/4" downpipe (OEM exit location). Now have stacks on flatbed. The BE sounded great, but love the stacks. Won't go back.

Sound is a tad bit louder in cab, but not much worse when cruising. Can be a bit rowdy when you really get on the go-pedal. Sound is a little deeper with the stacks also. Another plus with the stacks is, you don't have to find a wall or building to listen the sweet sound of the Cummins. Now all you have to do is, open the window.

geez, i guess that we're all the same -arent we! smokin people out, hearin the open pipe. its very funny! there is nothing like a fueled get -away from the tailgater behind with my straight -piped 2500(its amazing-in the day or night, when i watch the rear view mirror, just watchin all lanes fill up with smoke ! its like the first time every time! ).especially when the tailgater is unable to keep up. if i had the money for a good- quality dual stack system, id change in a heartbeat(ive seen single stacks--just not for me).

I've had both...

I loved the sound and visual impact of the stacks...

but the 5" straight pipe sounds better/louder/meaner than the stacks

I voted for stacks. I dont know what it is but I love em. When I stop using my truck for the hay and horses and it can finally be a full time play truck, I am definately doing 6" mitre cut stacks.

How about this...4 in. down pipe to 5 in. exhaust exiting just after the cab with one of those 6" tips from RIP ROOKS?? That would be mega loud!!!

Found it to be the opposite in my case. My stacks are louder.

the stacks were "smoother" sounding than the 5" straight pipe... the single pipe just sounds nasty
