Straight Pipe or after market exhaust system?
I am new to the diesel world and I am ready to start makins mods. I just bought a 01 2500 HO 6 spd. My plans for this truck is to make a strong but very dependable truck since its my daily driver. I have talked to several people around where i live, including a diesel mechanic who is supposed to be very good with building strong trucks, and they all say straight pipe the factory exhaust and spend the money elsewhere. What do yall think?

Welcome to the DTR!!
First you want to get a set of gauges, or Juice w/Attitude. Gotta have a FP gauge on your truck!
here is a good exhaust, i have put one on a fellow chapter members truck. Very nice kit and easy install + cheap.
Pinnacle Power
Then you could swiss cheese your air box for a little more air.
Then you could join your local chapter and get them to help you put all your new toys on.

Yeah, only other "legal" truck that I've ever heard that louder, though not necessarily deeper, is my cousin's 3.5" dual straight piped no muffler no cat 99 F250 V10. That thing sets off car alarms at an idle, and can hear it coming from a mile and a half away.
Wish I could make me ol' 12v that loud. Not even my bud's 06 cummins with a megamouth dp, 5" piped to 7" dual stacks via ypipe comes close to being that loud @ wot.

I'd say just go ahead and do a 4" aftermarket system and straight pipe that. That way it sounds better and flows better for when you start adding more power.
Personally no exhuast comes even remotely close to straight piped stacks in sound, and I'll never own another cummins without them... but I realize that they aren't for everyone, but thats always an option too.

I think you'll find if you wander around here that there is more specifics on the exhaust. What I mean size compared to horsepower. The more hp the more you'll want to open it up. Me, I spent my money on gauges, bought a piece of 3" pipe around 64 inches long and had them flare the one end. Removed the resonator, muffler and welded the pipe in place. Put on a 5" tip and it all together cost less than $100. I believe the pipe was around $35-40 and the tip was $40-50.
Then if you mod it heavy, get a bigger turbo, injectors and a mean programmer, then I'd look into dumping the stock exhaust for something more free flowing.
You can also do the BHAF for around $50-75 for heat shield and filter. So for around $200 you can have your BHAF and a nice sound.

Depends on what you want from your truck really... I mean, do you want sound? That's about all an exhaust will do on a stock truck. Are you on a budget? If I were to go back, I'd just replace my factory muffler with a straight-thru MBRP one and throw a 4-5" polished tip at the end.

I striaght piped the stock exhaust and it sounded great (loud, but great). And I just got my hands on a bunch of 14 gauge 4" stainless tube, and 6" stainless tube, so later today i'm making a 4" straight pipe with a nice big 6" tip, painted satin mettalic black. Hopefully the black looks good, otherwise i'll just paint it the silver exhaust color later. But man going from a 4" tip to 6" is crazy, the 6" is just plain big, I love it.

ive got a straight pipe right now. around january ill be putting in a 5" with a muffler. the way things are going, youll have to have a muffler to pass. id rather it be loud and at least LOOK legal.
and i figure...go big or go home!
