Stock HG+ Studs+ Lennys Stage 4's+ 48psi +20* timing on a 913 pump=?????

Im going to turn the timing back to 16.5 or 17. J&H set it to 20* and it cleaned things up nicely. Lenny told them that when using his stage 4 injectors that on the 913 pump 18-20 degrees was necessary. currious as to in a situation like this how long has anyone been able to keep thier HG running 20* with studs and a stock hg.

Whats really interesting is this truck a 215hp 913 pumpd truck with 16* timing is super quite like quiter than any other 12v ive ever heard especially a stocker. and to give you an idea it is still so quite that with 20* timing it was quieter than the 180hp truck next to it only running 16* timing. All times the timing was set with a dial indicator

Now this pump was just off and checked, cleaned and tuned.... wondering is it possible that in this pump maybe something might be timed a little different? cam ramping a little advanced than normal, leading to a higher reading on the dial indicator thus more lift than what the chart on PDR shows? making it appear to be 20* based on the dial indicator reading vs the actual timing of the injection event and piston location

if that makes any sense.

Thanks

I have my 180 pump set at 16*...and it's loud. Wish I had that 913 pump

How do you like Lenny's sticks? I'm keenly interested, not many folks hereabouts that are running them. They gotta be cleaner than these dang 370's

I wouldn't worry about it, the stock gasket with no studs should hold 48psi at that timing for quite a while

i have a set of lennys 4s and i am running 17 degrees on my 98 with a 913 pump. it runs strong, but i need more air real bad. it seems to sound like i have a stumble at 1500 to 1800 or so but feels fine. i think i will see how well it does with another turbo ad a full exhaust.

she is hard starting when its cold now, it was 28 this morning and i had to hold the throttle down while cranking to get her to fire. thinking might back her down to 17-18 and see what that yeilds. an idle adjustment might be needed but before the timing bump lol 1/2 a crank and she would fire off right now even in the sub 0 temps.

I dont know, im definately concerned about poping the hg at 20* especially when towing heavy, which is what she does most the time for me.

I also had a stumble at those rpms also had a touch of white smoke between 2000-2300. but that was with 16*.

I like the lenny sticks easy to control smoke but still billows when you roll into it until the twins catch up. honestly for my hp level im almost tempted to look at the stage 3's. Overall the stage 4's and stage 3s run really clean at 1/2 throttle and less.

down the road if someone i know opts to ditch a set stage 3's and jump up in hp to the stage 4's i might consider swapping.

thanks

ddestruel,
How are your exhaust temps with your compound turbos? I have the stage 4's on order and putting twins on in may, but what your saying about switching maybe to 3's in the future has me thinking that the 4's are too much?

FWIW,....I ran 20 degrees of timing with the stock head gasket and 12mm studs with no problems on my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve. I did this for over 75,000 miles running the truck pretty hard all the time including drag racing and towing heavy.

One of John's friends Rammin On is running the stock headgasket last I heard w/ quite a bit of timing and a Scheid tuned pump and no studs. I think he has like 200k on his truck. Luckiest guy in the world.

checked it again tonight its between 6.0 and 6.1 so that translates into 18.5*. i'll gamble on 18.5 and see how long she lives. ive gotten alot of meessages from guys who have run and seen a hand ful of trucks running 16-24 and having more than 100k miles doing that with stock head bolts and over 150k miles on the truck. suprising to say the least. about 1/2 have stock injectors the other half are big horser injectors.

EGTs at 16* were max 1200 degrees or a hair less at 53psi towing 12k lbs up donner pass WOT on the steep sections for up to 4 minutes all the way.

at 18.5 my emmissions are good enough till i have to actually meet a smog man

TravisG.:

Good point about Keith L.'s white 1995 Dodge CTD 12 valve!

You are right, he is running the stock HG with NO STUDS at all. I know that because when I went to my 14mm studs and firerings I gave him my old 12mm Scheid Studs to put in his truck. FWIW he is running 370's, 18-20 degrees of timing and as you said, that Scheid "Tuned" P7100 Pump.

Thanks for the input!
