Speaker Upgrade

I am going to upgrade my speakers on my 94 regular cab CTD. Is there any special tricks when taking off the door panel? I have power mirrors, windows and door locks.....

Not really, the wiring is a little tricky to get out of the connectors, and I would suggest getting new plastic fasteners, but everything else is simple.

BTW, you'll need to remove the door handles...which have a bolt holding them on.

Not sure where you are buying your speakers, but I love http://www.crutchfield.com cause they give you step by step instructions for the specific year model of your vechicle, and they let you know which speakers will fit properly and stuff like that...

Crutchfield

I used to use them but they stopped carrying JBL speakers (my personal favorite). Recently made a purchase from www.cardomain.com.
I like their site and most importantly, you can actually contact them and speak to a person and get customer service.

What I don't understand is both crutchfield and a number of other online shops say the factory door speaker size is a 6x9, but they go on to say that no 6x9 they carry will fit. Instead they offer up a number of smaller sizes saying they will fit with no mods neccessary. What gives? I bought a set of alpine 6x9s and I will be putting them on this weekend so I'll let you know if I run into any issues.

I have a set of crutchfeild directs if you want them...you don't need them!!!

Crutchfield's prices are OK, but you can find stuff cheaper!! But their customer service is top notch, so...

IIRC, the fronts are 6x9's, but you need to watch the depth. You can mak anything else fit with some creativity. The rears are 5-1/4" on the Club Cabs, don't know aboud Quads. I would guess they are the same!!

Just put my Alpine 6x9s in today. They would not fit due to depth like mentioned before. So I took the trim ring that came with them and put it between the back of the speaker and the door. Depth was perfect, it does stick out about 1/16" too far in though. Door panel still fits on no problem just pushes against it a little. I could make it fit perfect by grinding away some of the inside of the door panel, there is plenty of material to get rid of, but it's fine for now. It sounds fine, no vibration at all, much better than stock for sure.

I took my passenger side off to take a look at the speakers. I need to get some new plastic clips that hold the door panel tight against the door. Is this a dealer only part?

You should be able to find them at some auto parts stores. O'Reilly, NAPA, might have them. Around here, Westlake's Ace hardware stores have them. At the dealer, they're around $2 each.

Price has gone up! But the last time I bought any from the dealer was about 5 or so years ago. Haven't destroyed any of them since then.

back to speakers

So what size are the rear cab speakers on a 94 regular cab CTD. I have the infinity speaker setup. And I noticed the stock door speakers have a crossover on the 6 x 8 or is something else???

well the door speakers if its like mine are components so they do have a crossover and a tweeter attached and I feel it does give you a better sound having a separate tweeter it widens the sound field so in my opinion you should try and find another set of components that you like but other people might have another opinion.

I prefer to have the mid & tweet together... Separating them can bring the sound stage up higher, but at the expense of imaging.

it's all very nit-picky, and I don't think a Dodge is very conducive to good sound anyway...
