Southbend clutch

I had posted a forum a week or so ago asking about a new clutch and pretty much everybody said get a southbend. So I have been looking at them and researching them and I have found one that seems to fit the description I am looking for. I was wandering if any one had gotten or heard anything about the MU 1947 Con. FE. I have a 2002 2500 6sp HO and i just put a comp box on it and soon after the clutch I am going to do some injectors and I was wandering if that was a good choice for a clutch. I also do moderate towing.

I have this exact clutch-- it's only been in 3 weeks. I love it.

While I personally think you could tow with it, I'd suggest that a milder clutch would give you better towing performance.

The Con OFE is the clutch of choice for towing....

450/1000 for the ofe. From what I hear the FE is like an on/off switch with no slipping which is why people don't like backing trailers in with them. If you're aiming for more than 450 and want something that will slip you can look at the milder dual disks with organic linings.

The FE is pretty grabby, but I wouldn't say its a switch. Good clutch for as long as I have had mine in too.. I am also on week 3 and love it.

The "seat in" was the funniest. I got the clutch in and then went around town and took every stop sign I could find. Initially it felt just like the stock, silky take off and easy going. Then just one time, bang, I stalled the truck taking off in 2nd. In just about an hour of start and stops, its seating in and now it hooks hard.

I will be towing with it and I am not worried about it. 4L will come in handy and if I get the ambition I will install the 2L solenoid for backing in.

I've been running mine for almost two years. 434hp and 1000lbs of torque. I have towed 12k trailer and it works fine, but it is a bit grabby. No signs of slippage yet, but I don't work the clutch too hard, most of my playtime is 3rd gear on up.

i suggest you drop some more money and get the dual disk. i had a fe and it held ok, but would not take a speed shift at 1000 fpt. it would just slip, i have since upgraded to southbend dual disk and it is miles ahead of the fe single. in holding power and drivability. if i did not have 4wd i don't think i could have backed up either one of my big trailers up a small hill. it would buck something terrible with the fe.

It depends on your priorities. Even the Con OFE is not as smooth as the stock clutch and needs about 1000 RPM to smooth out when spotting a trailer - if I try to slip it at idle, it definitely chatters! Since my truck spends 95% of its working life towing our 5th wheel, I wouldn't want a "grabbier" clutch for my application. If you spend less time towing, the FE might be fine.

Clutch selection, like many things in life, is a compromise. Ya pays yore money and ya takes yore choice.
