Sourcing .355 rear end gear
Thinking about changing my .410 out to .355. My main reason is to lower the noise inside the cab. I don't really think it will make that big of a difference in fuel economy, although it shouldn't hurt and could help a little too. I'm just trying to reduce noise a bit.
Truck seems to have plenty of power and I don't think I'll have any towing issues witht the .355. I haven't towed 10k+ in quite a while now.
Where is best place to source the new rear end gearing?
Thanks for the help, Matt

.355 eh?! We going for the land speed record?! I know your truck has good low end...but man! haha...just razzing ya! Its 4.10 and 3.55. BUT for gears....i have had great experience with Randys Ring and Pinion. TOP NOTCH service!! I can't stress that enough! Prices aint bad...but thoes axles you are talking about are High Dollar!! But talk to them and they might be able to work something out for ya.....great install kits they have......
ALSO might want to scavange for some one that needs 4.10.....Hunter (Big Blue's roommate) Might need some....
You should see about 1-1.5 MPG differance at 70MPH....brings the motor back down to 2000 RPM at 70......lots more efficent.....my 2

Thanks for the info Dan, but I think my gears are gonna stay in my truck. My milage is crappy enough with this heavy truck, no need to make it any worse.

I swapped from 3.55-4.10 with 35" bfg's. My mileage has gone down, I bet, at least 2-3 mpg. It is unbelieveable. Cruising down the hwy at 75 before I was hitting 7psi of boost, now it is 15psi. It pulls much better and that is why I did it. But now I AM going to get an overdrive unit. If you dont know how to re gear, get the overdrive unit. Essentially turn it into a 10 speed -5speed tranny or 12 speed -6speed tranny. I am saving for the us gear now. It will go in. I want the mileage back. I didnt think it would make much difference, but it does.

Ouch, $2795 for the overdrive unit. Install not included with pretty major fabricating including drive shaft and floor pan by the installer. Don't think I can handle that. Back to plan A. Thanks for the idea though.

I went from 4.10 to 3.55. I would have went for 3.31 if the price wasn't so insane. They want $700 (almost 680 something) for the GEAR SET only (comes with install kit). They are a Dana only item.
I managed to find my 3.54 used. Well actuallt the where brand new and came out of an axle that someone sold the houseing seperately. I wanted to stay posi and purchased one that claimed it was 3.54. Didn't really look at it close when I got it, but when I set my carrier next to the new one it was the same thing. I ended up having to use the brand new open carrier/gear set.
Just try to see the items before you buy them. Also, if anyone needs a Dana 80 posi carrier I have two of them and one 4.10 gear set.

We went from 285 BFG AT to the 315 Maxxis Mudders and had no change in milage. May have been some boost increase. It does coast less. It runs about 7-9 psi at 75. There was some power loss with the change but not enough to be an issue. BTW, we get just over 18MPG (hand calc).

You can expect
about 300 RPM or so difference with these gears. Here is my experience with both, 4.10 and 3.55, i had a ford IDI with 265 tires that would turn 2000 rpms at 60 MPH.. with the 4.10 rear. pullin sonvabuck, with a wicked take off, and acceleration, yet no top speed whatsoever.... My ram with the .355 rear, is just the opposite, well power and tq overcome wimpy gears too hehehehehehe.... regardless, it takes a little more to get going, and with .285 tires, it actually gets 2000 rpms at 70 mph.. which to me is perfect.
If you do alot of highway travel, id say 355 is way to go, if you tow alot, 355 works, but 410 is better. I have not ran stock tires on my truck, but my MPG is about 16-18 city, and 20-21 highway... so i dont complain...
