Sound of 4" -Vs- 5" Single Straight Pipe Exhaust....??
I'm looking for a deeper/meaner sound to my 12 V.
There is a Fire Engine here in my town that sounds MEAN-as-Hell and I want my truck to sound like it too! I noticed it has a HUGE single exhause sticking out the side. It looks like 5...maybe even 6" diameter pipe sticking out of it ??
Anyone running a single 5" Straight Exhaust ??
Are there sound clips anywhere out here ??

A sound clip will never do justice to 5'' pipe. Generally, the bigger the pipe, the 'meatier' the sound. I love my 5'' stack--it sounds like a completely different truck when compared to the old 3.5'' straight pipe. No matter how hard we try, there's no competeing with the real big trucks 'cause there's no replacement for displacement and a 5.9 liter is never gonna sound just like an 11 liter.

i ran single 5 straight pipe on my 2500 for about 2 weeks and it is now sitting on my garage floor for sale.. the sound was awsome but the cab drone was too bad i am now running dual 4in straight pipe. the truck still sounds awsome but there is very little cab drone...

A five inch
is a much deeper sound than a 4 inch exhaust, i personally love the way that they sound. Ive seen a couple of duallies in town with five inch straights and man do they sound nice!

Well I just ordered the Megamouth downpipe (4" output). Would the sound be any better if I use a 4' piece of straight 5" pipe behind it instead of a 4' 4" piece? I doubt it would make much difference since I'm restricted by the 4" downpipe (not that 4" is a restriction to a stock motor ) but as far as sound goes...would the sound change?

I dont think there is much difference in 4 inch and 5 inch, but given the choice; i would rather have 5 inch The sound is just deeper. Here is a sound clip of my homemade exhaust. 4 inch from turbo to back of cab; and 4.5 inch on out into a 6 inch tip.

I've got a 5-inch strait pipe. My truck has the stock down pipe, and at the transmission crossmember it goes from a 3" pipe to a 5" pipe, and is 5 inches all the way back! I love the sound...and I'll never take it off!! (unless I go bigger or get stacks)

If you're looking for performance, stay with 4" until you get to about 550hp. I noticed slower spool-up with 5" at 360hp, than I did with 4" at 325
Rip Rook lost 10hp by changing from 5" to 4" so he could stand to drive it on long trips. This was at ~615hp BTW
JMHO,
Chris

So it appears SOME backpressure is still NEEDED (even on Diesels.)

No they dont want back pressure, the reason a 4 inch will run better till about 550 is the air will pump more efficiantly out that size tube. a 5 inch does not keep air speed up well enough and will hurt the performance till you cross the magic 550 hp threshold.

Not all firetrucks have Detroits in them. And very few have 8V92s in them...at least around here. The ones with Detroits at the department where are work are all 6V92s except for one ladder that has a 60 series. We also have 3 trucks with 320 hp 8.3L cummins and 4 trucks with 400 hp cummins motors in them .
