so...stock turbo + 10.8 drag comp = not too fun

So I finally did an acceleration from a stop with my drag comp on 5/5, and since I need to adjust something in my transmission whenever it gets to the top of 1st whne I don't get into it right away it won't shift until I let off, so I do that it goes to 2nd, then beginning of 3rd and I look at my egt gauge, and its pegged at 1600, so I let off, everything is normal so I'm not worried ,just won't do that again.

....so I've come to the conclusion that...I really, REALLY need a turbo before I think of doing anything else, not to mention I need to take my transmission down and have it serviced, hopefully they don't give me the whole "it needs this and that done" since it acts completely normal other htan that 1st -2nd gear shift on WOT.

But anyway I know there is about 238749327423 posts about "WHICH TURBO" and I've even made a few but....I'm looking at wanting 500 hp or so with what I have now, I never ever tow, don't even own a trailer, so if I did it would be like towing a uhaul trailer or something, weighing maybe 5k lbs or so, which is the most I have towed. I daily drive the truck, so whats too big of a turbo? and whats the minimal I'd need for that with my injectors, or would I need to go bigger on those?

anyway sorry to make a new post since there is a lot of these, but which way do I go? thanks for the input!

A 64/12 would probably be a good 500hp charger if you dont tow.

I was thinking a 64/1X turbo, whats the major different between the 64/12 and 64/14, I see most people want the 12, I'm guessing similar power faster spoolup due the the smaller housing?

I like my BD Super B Special alot. It's a 64-71/14 and is wastegate at 48psi. Also it's made in house at Borg Warner unlike other turbos out there.

Have you been on a dyno with that setup? I'm looking at one of the II super phat shaft 62 or phat shaft 64 probably, going to do some research and wonder why the 62 is capable of 50 more hp than the 64 but yet same price, has me wondering...

the 12cm housing will just spool a little faster, and be a little more driveable than the 14.

I also run the BD super B. With the auto tranny this will give a fast spool up.

you have the exact same setup as mine, well when i used to run a drag comp. i made 542hp on a drag comp, DDIIIs, SPS 62/14 and love my setup. i can still get to 1600 on a longer run so if you absolutely dont want to watch the EGT gauge go with a 66 but i think it will be pretty laggy, i think the best of both worlds (spoolup/egt control) the SPS62 is real hard to beat. i have heard good things about the super b special too, no first hand experience though.

if you cant go twins, id say go with the sps 62 or any 62/14-71 turbo. i have to say that was the best single turbo i ever owned

You're comparing two different sized turbine wheels, a Phatshaft has a 65 mm wheels, while the Super Phatshaft has a 71 mm. The 71 is much better for flow, and will allow for more power with the smaller compressor.

On a side note, a Silver 62 is capable of power equal to a Phatshaft 66. The 74 mm wheel in the Silver allows it to flow extremely well. The smaller turbine wheels are a bottle neck, and cause the drive pressure and EGT's to go up exponentially. The turbine side is what causes the restriction, not compressor size.

The 65 turbine seems to be more linear in how it responds to throttle input, much like the hx35 although at high boost levels it does cause a restriction which can run drive pressure up thus hurting overall power.

Our Super B Special would be a good turbo if you dont plan on towing with the truck. I you plan to tow or want to upgrade into twins get the regular Super B.

From other threads, I believe the Super B is 57/71/14 and the Special is 64/71/14.

I've been told by two of their suppliers about the specs on the special. I'm thinking its a smaller turbine on the super b, but don't really know.
