http://www.mcmaster.com/asp/enter.asp?pagenum=517 Scroll down to the Orifice-Style Low-Pressure Snubbers. You will want the 303 Stainless Steel in .008" Dia. Orifice, available in 1/4 or 1/8 NPT, whichever size you need. I used the 1/4" X 1 1/4", part # 3820K52.

They cancel out the fuel pulses and some of the vibration coming from the injection pump. It will work fine without it, but will not last as long. They will not affect the pressure reading. If you have a mechanical gauge, it will keep the needle from having a slight twitch and from being as noisy in the cab. This is a common problem for folks that tap in at or close to the injection pump. If you have a digital gauge, it will keep the fuel pulses from killing your electronic sending unit, which the fuel pulses will do in short order without a snubber. For instance, tap into your fuel system at the point of choice, run about 18 inches of hose from there with the snubber on the end, then the electronic sending unit into the snubber. It will last forever.
As far as getting them locally, hard to say. AutoZone and NAPA usually do not carry an assortment of fittings, and a snubber is a specialty part. Not that common. You may get lucky though. Home depot and the like will not have it. If you have any industrial hardware/part stores, like AIH, they would be a better bet. Check the yellow pages for industrial/heavy equipment repair/parts. We have a guy here that makes/fixes hydraulic hoses for heavy equipment (dozers and stuff). He carries them. Folks like that.
on edit: They are not as critical on mechanical gauges. If you run a digital gauge, they are a must.

1/8'' needle valves are readily available from most any place that sells plumbing. They are used for the water supply line shut off on ice makers and swamp coolers.
I personally use this one from Grainger http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/pro...835462&ccitem=
I prefer a needle valve over a snubber because then you have the option of shutting it down all the way in case of a leak.
