Is a Smarty really worth the $$
#16
I'm a fan of programmers because they don't fail or crap out like boxes can and do... i'm still waiting for my xzillaraider that i sent back on warranty. Any performance box has that drawback as far as i'm concerned. The only thing about a smarty is that it makes the throttle super touchy.

Hey Guys...thanks for all of the great input! I guess I have a little homework to do before making the purchase. I wish y'all would have told me any one of the tuners increased fuel milage by leaps and bounds, it would have made selling the Mrs. alot easier!

The XZT+ sounds like a neat box. I like my Smarty. You can do a ton of stuff with it. The anti theft modes, 1/2 fuel, speed limter adjust, high idle/cylinder cutout, tire size adjust, DTC reader and then all the catcher programs. I had to buy mine for the 1/2 fuel program to pass the county opacity standard.

I beta tested the XZT+ for quad & got lower egts, less smoke compared to Smarty. The XZT+ is smoother & has better egt control due to the on the fly adjustability. I'm not saying that the Smarty isn't a awesome tuner, It is by far the best programmer for our rigs. The quad products are the best modules available.

I would get the Adrenaline If you don't want that much power the XZT+ would be my choice. Nothing like a on the fly adjustment for towing & the egts are lower, less smoke, half the price of Smarty, more programs released this month than Smarty had in a lifetime. Easy choice for me

Never used an XZT product, but I love my Smarty on my 01. Low end is what it is all about. It is a whole new truck when you load the smarty onto it.
Consider how many XZT products have been sent back for warranty repair work vs. how many Smarty's have been sent back... The comment about more programs released in one month makes me wonder how far off the first program was...
If you can't decide, find someone local with a Smarty to try or call Bob Wagner to send you a loaner.

In regards to emmissions I went in on the first test to prove a point.
Mach 6+
Edge Juice with attitude set on level 6x5
In Washington, we do a snap idle test. So this would probably not work on a load test.
Opacity Limit % 40
Opacity Reading % 2
That's right, I was at 2% following the testing instructions exactly.
I would bet my life that the Smarty on any level other than stock would not produce the same results. It's all about that low end fueling.

I agree.
Playing devils advocate, it can also be said that Quad has shown a commitment to the 2nd gen VP trucks. Clearly something that the Smarty camp has not.

Now compare that list of choices to this http://www.madselectronics.com/DownloadS03A.html

Only reason I'm keeping my SMARTY is I'm out of room in my quad cab and more than likely jumping into the 3rd gen camp as well. I heard you can send your 2nd gen programmer in and redone for the 3rd gen for a small up charge. Other than that I can't see a market for them in the 2nd gens anymore. Unless they decide to do something vastly different like try to compete with the Quadzilla camp. If thats the case they have plenty of catching up to do as the Adrenaline is just about perfect in every situation and has a multitude of added features all backed up with a company that is commited to the 2nd gen crowd. All IMHO of course.

Most folks don't realize that a new box means new options not just the latest power enhancements...there will be several more features developed for the Adrenaline, this thing has a big processor and we're not even into the second phase of testing...much less the 3rd...

In this county at 4300 feet, the requirement is 20% opacity but most will let you get by at 30%. They do two runs on a dyno snap throttle and 50mph to wide open throttle. Juice turned off with everything in my sig with the exception that I had stage 2 nozzles and a 35/40 hybrid turbo and no Smarty I was at 60%. I thought they were going to impound the truck the emissions ***** were so upset. Bought Smarty, went in and passed at 24% at 1/2 fuel. They still gave me crap but passed the truck. I could have put my HY back on and probably passed but I'm glad I got the Smarty.
