silencer ring

I told my friend how i did this mod and he talked to a service manager at interational who told him that taking it out can cause something called "dusting off" the motor which can cause particles to get in the cylinder walls and scar them. Not short term but after a while. I think this is bull cause if the particles are gonna get in with it gone, then why not with it there, anyone know anything specific about this

It's a load of bull. Don't know about dislodging particles, that entire area should be free from particles. Since the air that goes to the turbo is filtered. IMO that international guy is full of it.

That ring is on the clean side of the filter...taking it out does nothing but let her sing.

the silencer ring was only put in to "silence"......

the 5.9's in RV's and buses dont even have them.

simply no way the lack of the ring could cause engine damage

I agree.....total BS...I pulled mine yesterday, the only 'particles' that could get into mine were caused be the edge of the screwdriver i used to start prying the retaining ring out, it slipped on the first twist and scraped a tiny sliver of alum. from the housing (removed obviously). The new sing isn't very noticable with the stock air box that will be resolved shortly.

Yes, I removed mine and put a big K&N cone filter on and it will really sing. That with the 4" straight pipe it sounds like a mini-semi coming down the road.
