I'm not a fluid dynamic engineer but wondered if this piece in some way smoothed out the turbulence from trucking down the intake tube before it hit the compressor wheel.
It helps some because there isn't enough room to do it right under the hood of a Ram.
The rule in turbo engine design when space isn't a factor is there should be at least five times the turbo inlet size of straight hose or pipe before the turbo intake to reduce turbulence.
That would mean a 20 inch straight run on a HX35.
Instead what we have is a intake hose that's almost totally a curve.
That's where the ring and other air straightening devices like are being used in the newer engines come in.

That's interesting! The thing just LOOKS like it smooths out flow, too.

There is really no down falls that I have found in it, just more whistle, but i really dont think it hurts your efficency any. I still get 16-17mpg in town and 19-22mpg on highway with mine out.

If you want loud drill a 3" hole with a holesaw in your firewall behind your intake. Does wonders for the ears. Even adds a couple HP by drawing cold air from the air conditioned cab into your air filter and eventually to your engine. I hooked my AC vents directly up to my air filter and gained 19hp according to the seat "O" the pants meter You guys kill me. Take it out it gets louder. SEARCH. it's a wonderful function of this forum.
