silencer ring?
#3
It is a cone-shaped metal ring on the inside of your turbo intake, where the flexible hose clamps on, from the air cleaner. Removing the silencer ring won't hurt anything, and won't increase performance- but it does allow you to hear the turbo whistle more. Not a lot, to the point of being irritating, but more than with it in. I like the sound. It's kind of like a 4x4 emblem- lets you know it's still there.

Holset sells a an improved ring that's supposed to make the turbo more efficient.
Makes me think that even the stock ring must help some with efficiency.
After all it takes energy to make noise so even though it might be a very low amount removing the ring has to decrease power.

I pulled the ring years ago, no performance increase and didn't notice any more noise. However the ring was a conical shaped piece of metal that appeared to direct air towards the center of the compressor wheel. I'm not a fluid dynamic engineer but wondered if this piece in some way smoothed out the turbulence from trucking down the intake tube before it hit the compressor wheel. Aside from that mine is back in but like I said, I didn't notice anything either way and when it was removed I did not feel any decrease in performance, but it sure is fun to experiment with it!! Just be careful when your taking out that monster snap ring that you don't ding your compressor wheel. It is a balanced wheel and if you ding it you might throw off the balance, like an unbalanced tire rotating at 100,000 rpm!

Air comes up from behind the silencer ring, and then back into the inlet. The Map Width Enhancement groove lets air leave the compressor and recirculates it back to the inlet. Helps prevent surge.

I haven't noticed any performance changes in my truck, with or without the ring in. I had mine out for a while, then put it back in, and have it out again. No performance or mileage difference, as far as I can tell. If it does make a difference, it is very small. And as far as noise/inspections go, I can't see it making a difference. It is not noisy with the ring out- you can just hear the whine of the turbo. It doesn't make it loud. At least, not on mine.
