Question Should I buy the HD version of the VP44?

Okay, it appears that I need to replace the VP44 on my 98.5

It is throwing codes and they won't clear anymore like they used to.

I've been driving it with the dead pedal syndrome for two years because I can't get ready to spend big bucks on something that "might cure" the problem.

The truck is box stock except for the Van Aken box. It has 116k miles on it.

Should I replace the pump with a standard version or the HD version? Currently the truck is under powered it seems although it runs okay when the temps are below 50 degrees. What ever is causing the DP, it is temperature related. Over 50 it gets aggravating. Over 90 it is definitely a big time nuisance. I have learned how to keep it from happening by modulating the pedal consistently but that wastes fuel besides being a bigger nuisance.

Also I am wondering about maybe slightly larger injectors for a few horsepower and hopefully better mpg and or getting a Smarty or the Predator tuner??

Any thoughts out there for my delima?

A dieing vp44 will cost you power so a new one will get some back. There have been dozens of updates on vp44's since 98 regarless where you buy. I'd look for a direct replacement from a repudable shop then bomb away for more power. A hot rod pump would give you a bump in power, but many have argued you get a better bang for your buck with injectors. As far as I can tell my hot rod pump was good for around 80 hp.

You can get a SO pump for under $1100 and a set of 100hp jammers for under $300, or the HRVP for 16-17 hundred. The jammers would probley be more smokey though.

You don't list what tranny you have...but with your summer temps, I feel adjustable power is preferable over full time smoke from a HRVP.
A standard VP44, Smarty and a small set of injectors (Mach 1.6's) would be a sweet ride and fun to play with. You'll need some gauges, first.
