Question Short Shift Kits

I run a 5 speed and have been looking at several compnaies short shift kits to reduce throw. I have also heard of guys making their own by bending the stock shifter handle, it is likely that these kits are only a modifed shifter anyway since the gear still has to be moved the same amount anyway. Any thoughts or cheap ideas??

What other companies make them besides BD? I've never seen any others.
It's my understanding that the "short shifter" just pivots at a higher point up from the tranny....yes - no ?

I have a BD short shift. The lever under the shifter base is longer than stock, therefore the shifter above the pivot point has to travel less to move the rod the same amount. Think of it like a teeter-totter from when you were a kid. The board was evenly spaced on the pivot point, and you and your friend would both rise the same amount. if you were to move the board over to one side, the short side would travel less but the longer side would travel farther. It would also be harder raise the person up on the longer side due to having less leverage on the short side, same with the shifter it will take more effort to shift, but the stroke is shorter. I had a HURST shorty shifter in a Mustang and the handle only had to move like 1 inch, it was cool.

I have the BD for my six speed. Much better than stock, but I wished the NV5600 was as short and tight as a Hurst shifted T56.

Now that's a short shift.

Expect to pay over $200 from everywhere I've seen them I can earmark that much $$$ for other BOMBS until the truck is "done" imo.

The guys like me who have a bend shift lever aren't out to lunch....it's not a short shifter, it's only meant to put the shift **** very close to your leg instead of far away, that's a whole different subject.

I've had the BD short shifter in both 6sp and 5spd. It is a closer and quicker shift, but not smoother. I'm my experience it made the shift notchier, much like a powerstroke tranny.

Sorry 94-97 guys but the shortshift kits don't work on those tranny's. They have different shift towers than the 98 and up.

Get hold of Kevin or Chris at DPS. They are making there own unit. They changed a bunch of things over the BD unit, way better!!!

236-9216.....They are just around the corner from the old Calgary BD shop.

They will look after you.

HA HA HA

That why I changed mine out for the newer one. Compared to the old one, this new one IS a short throw shifter.

I do have a BD unit I'm going to throw on this weekend. We'll see how I like it afterwards, this tranny is hard to shift as it is with the DD clutch and brand new synchros

Chris

BTW, Does this "DPS" have a full name or a website to look at. Thanks
