rim width for 315's

my buddy is selling me some nearly brand new 315 BFG all terrains for really cheap so he can upgrade to 38's...but my problem is right now i am running some cragar chrome wheels...16x7.5" and my 285s are ballooning on them and i know i cant go larger. But i see so many guys running 315's on stock wheels that are 16x8.

I need to decide if I wanna put these tires on my stock rims still in the garage or should i wait until i get a good deal on something like a 16x10?

I too see 315's on lots of the stock aluminum 16x8 wheels....appears to be no problem as long as not towing heavy. I think 7.5" wheels would be pushing it. I think 315's on 16X10 wheels look "stubby"...short & fat. But that's personal preference and just my opinion.

There is (or was last week) a set of the stock AL wheels in the classified section.

i have a set of stock aluminum wheels...but im wondering if 8" rim is pushing it or should i go to something safer like a 16x10 or 16x9...i dont tow heavy...and i dont go offroad anymore (maybe a mud puddle here or there) but thats it

8" is pushing it, but it's within the somewhat narrow range of "approve rim widths" for the manufacturer.

I'd think they are safe on an 8" rim, even while towing. But only in the sense that the tires won't fail.

OTOH, the handling when towing heavy will be a little squirmy, and that may not be so safe.

That said, 315 D rated tires will be squirmy for heavy towing, regardless of rim width.

Since you don't tow, I'd say 16x8s are perfect for the 315s. 315 on stock '02 alloys is my plan long term. Gotta wear out these dumb 265s first.

Go with the 10'in. I have 10'in on mine (pics in gallery) and they seem to be just right. 8'in are not wide enough, looks like a balloon.

Well, if you're talking looks, that's one thing.

But according to the manufacturer of the tire, 8" *IS* wide enough.

Those 10" sure do look good!

The lift is a Warn black diamond (no longer available, I think Warn got out of the lift business), coil spacers in the front and an add-a-leaf in the rear. The control arms are stock. The ride is good and the suspension is tight, especially for 65k on the truck.

Not trying to hijack, but I have a question. The factory 05 wheels are 17x8. I want to run the 315 BFG ATs, but the rim range is from 8.5-10. Does that mean I can't run the tires with the 05 factory wheels? Any help?

rim width

i have always been of the opinion that the rim width should be within 1 inch of installed tire tread width. tires seem to last a lot longer that way. i always try to get the 2 widths as close as possible.

Not to change the subject...but just saw where BFG now makes an E rated tire in 285/75/16.

I believe this is new! Nice addition for many of us...and I thought it was worth mentioning.
