Rigging Cruise control to high idle??

Since the cruise is Vaccum controlled, do think there is a way to hotwire it to use it for a high idle?? Anyone with more knowledge on how it works have any idea if there is any way to try??

Give me some ideas, I'd be glad to try some stuff out on my truck!!

Chris

I would like something that I can flip a switch and have it idle about 1k to help it cool down. With the twins and pulling hard it seems to take long to get it down to 300*..

I thought the dealer can program this. I read that somewhere here and it also says it in my owner's manual. When programed one would use their cruise control switches to adjust the idle.

Good luck!

I messed with mine a little, and all I could get it to do was full throttle or nothing, maybe some kind of variable resistor in line would work wonders?

Chris,

DTR Member Marine has a Harold Bowers high idle kit. See his photo gallery for the connection at the APPS. It is very reasonably priced. I've been meaning to call and order one, but my time has been limited in the past month and a half.

This is the contact info for Harold: rvhvnfn@juno.com 208-459-7849

I also have the Harold Bowers Hi Idler. I use it regularly. Easy to install, kicks off as soon as truck is put into gear. Can set idle wherever.

Mine works in any weather, any temperature, for as long as you want it to hold high idle.
And it cost me zip.

I also have Harold Browers(I believe) hi-idler kit on mine, kit is VERY reasonably priced, and it works great. You can adjust it to whatever rpm's you want, and just flip switch, and it's on or off, or you can tie into neutral switch to kick off automatically. This will keep engine temps higher for cleaner combustion, prevent sludge buildup, valves from sticking, and keep fuel out of oil.

I tried making my own here, but couldn't locate motor small enough(or cheap enough), and with the holding power Harolds kit has. Hi-idle setup at factory won't give you the freedom to decide when YOU want it on, or need it on. Sorry don't have pics posted of mine yet(Marine does as stated), but it's an easy setup to do, and well worth the money. If someone doesn't have his #, I have it somewhere, just p.m. me and i'll get it for you.

Why does everyone speak of this high idle thing?? Is it just canadian trucks that come from the factory with high idle??

If it is below -5*C (around 23*) my truck automatically ramps up the idle too 1800 rpm after 10 minutes. At 5 minutes it is 1250. I thought there was something wrong, but my tech told me it is the high idle.

I think just the 02's maby 01's have that. The older trucks don't have it and if it can be add by the dealership I can't remember. It is the ECM that does it the dealer has to reflash it. The instructions are on here I have seen Phox post them befor. It sure supprised me I was working on the truck and had it running when the RPM just kept going up in about 50RPM incruments . I didn't know if it was going to stop but it did at about 1200RPM. I didn't know it would go to 1800 RPM though.

On my 01 I had to have the high idel activated at the dealer. It's great for start up but thats the only time it works. I use shovelheads stick method for when I have to leave it idel for 10-15 min while I run in somewhere. The stick holds the rpms at about 1300 and keeps the egts up.

You used the CC to do this?? Could you explain how, please?

Thanks,
Chris

My 01 has this but I never got it enabled, because it would only go to 1300 rpm as I was told by dealer, and only when it was cold, not at any other time if engine was warm. Not sure if this is just a Canadian option or not, could be but it probably was programmed into everytruck, just needed to be enabled . That's why I bought hi-idler kit instead, it's much more versatile.

I didn't know they could be programmed to go that high of an rpm range(maybe tech forgot to stop at 1300) , that's quite a bit higher than probably needed, she must just scream at 1800 rpm . One of my buddies 3rd gen has his enabled, but it only goes to 1300 rpm's also, and only when cold.

The whole cruise control deal only works on 24v trucks. You can also make them run on 3 cyls when it is cold to load the other 3 for warmup.

Here is a setup i saw recently:
