I've been trying to figure this out. They appear to be about the same. High flow muffler or resonator? STACKS ARE TOOOOOOO LOUD! I have a muffler sitting in the garage but it's big and bulky. I'm think a short resonator to help with the noise. I don't mind the Turbo whistle.

A lot easier to squeeze one in than a huge water heater sized muffler.

Water heater size resonator muffler is most efficient type of muffler in a diesel engine. Flow through glass pack whistles offer neglible help.
Engines running off paint-brush-solvent
, have their exhaust note on a totally different octave than diesel engines. Higher pitch will get absorbed by wool inside the flow-through-whistle, whereas diesel roar will walk right through that joke of a muffler.
All effective diesel mufflers are indeed chamber type resonance mufflers.
Here's one aftermarket muffler option worth a look:

Here's a simplified oversight to this matter:

Here's more detailed insight on what's really going on (I kindly urge all you folks who are into DIY, to look at this document really carefully):

I was previously straight piped.. LOUD. I bought the $19 Summit racing bullet "muffler" with the short body (I think it's 12" muffler, 18" overall).. It made a WORLD of difference. The tone is still there (actually deeper sounding, less "raw"), but the volume is certainly down to a tolerable level.
Unfortunately, Summit doesn't do a 4" version anymore. There is a Dynomax Race magnum for $37.95.. should offer a little deadening (it's a performated tube design, just without any glasspack around it).. I run a Dynomax UltraFlo welded (on my rock buggy), and it's pretty quiet, but still has a GREAT tone when you get on it. Not sure how it would sound on a diesel...

Buckshot my Aerotubine came as a resonated model available in both 4 and 5" sizes now. Just enough to take the edge off without sacrificing the low growl!
26" long and about 10 lbs
Recent dynoday got nothing but compliments on the quality of sound.

Summit welded straight thru muffler
Summit makes a nice 3 inch ID muffler 24 inches long with a welded 5 inch body for only $29. I put one on my Dodge instead of a straight pipe and got a nice pleasing sound.
