Re:replacement fuel shut off solenoid $432.00

Seems like I remember a member on here using a $12 choke cable to activate the solenoid arm. ???

Piers Diesel Research sells them everyday for $150. Shipping might take a little while from Canada, but worth the wait.

My relay crapped out on my Saturday and I'm still getting under the hood to manually pull up on the solenoid to start it. This is the 2nd time the relay has gave up the ghost on me @ 160K miles. Are you sure its your solenoid or is it the shutoff solenoid relay?

When mine went out the first time I thought it was my solenoid, went and bought a new one and got home that night and my latest issue of TDR magazine had come and I sat down and read it and a guy with the same model truck as me had the same problem, but just replaced his relay. I ended up just filing the contacts on mine and its worked like a charm for the past 6 months or so. Took the solenoid back and got my $$ back!

Now I think I'll just go to radio shack and get the $6 replacement relay! ;D

Better yet, go to a wrecking yard and get a whole handful of relays for a dollar.
If you are considering a whole solenoid, think about the choke cable route.
george

I believe someone said you can get the solenoid for almost half that at a Freightliner shop.

In addition to checking your relays, check the blue power cable going from the battery on the driver's side. Mine had a blown fuse. If I had known that, it would have saved me $1200 in unneeded repairs.

It may not even be a relay it could just be a wire that is not making good constant contact . This happened on my dads 95 and all we did was splice the wire and off he went.
Wheels

One is bigger than the other...THE SMALLER relay is your fuel shutoff solenoid relay. You will have to break away some of the plastic to get the relay out, but mine went back in when I was finished. But what you have to do is take the relay out and partially disasemble it. It sounds a lot harder than it actually was to do.

I'll get you a picture of the location of it when I get home this afternoon. Check back this evening.
