Remove muffler?

Hey folks. My truck has a Banks 4 inch exhaust starting at the turbo with a muffler. Is there any reason why I shouldn't remove the muffler? I have been hearing a lot about people removing their mufflers for purposes of better sound. Is this true? Any advantages in performance? Honestly, I'm looking for better sound. Thanks for your time.

Rigg4x4

Re:Remove muffler?

Yeah it'll sound like an 18 Wheeler!! ;D

I just have the factory 3" straightpiped, and it's definatley loud. Your 4" would be louder though. Just becareful of the local authorities some are cool and don't pay much attention to diesel's, but when I bring my 79 Chevy to town with true duals and 12" glasspacks that's another thing. See what I mean?

Re:Remove muffler?

Strangest thing keeps happening around my place. The muffler gets stolen, then reappears only to be stolen again.

I REALLY like the sound without it. However, it does turn a few heads my direction. Enough attention to, possibly, turn the head of a local officer.
Then... mysteriously, the muffler reappears.

Rich

Re:Remove muffler?

I removed my muffler, left the little resonator on, I am tempted to take it off too. The muffler has a 4" inlet and a 3" outlet, I had a 3" piece of pipe stretched to just under 4", so it slipped inside the header pipe. It has a nice deep tone, sweet whistle, very little snap or bark, shouldn't cause any issues with the authorities.

Re:Remove muffler?

I had mine straight piped with the factory pipe. It was not loud enough for me so I went to the stacks withall 4inch but the down pipe. It still is not loud enough so I will be frabercating a 4inch down pipe to go with it. maybe some day a 5inch will take its place. ;D
DM01

Straight piped my '03 and it sounds louder than my '02 did from the inside..my neighbor said the '02 was louder... I think it sounds louder cause ther is no engine noise to compete with..

Re:Remove muffler?

Noise? Son, a straight piped Cummins creates music. A ricer creates noise.
