quiet cummins?

What makes the new cummins so much more quiet than my 99'. I thought someone told me bigger injectors will quiet my cummins just a little.

add 1qt of 2 stroke motor/outboard oil to the fuel tank, that will quiet it down a little. injectors just usually smooth it out.

the 3rd gens have a different type of fuel injection system, that fuel is injected before and after firing,to quiet it down, i think. someone will chime in and correct me.

i was told it was from the injection pump spraying 3 times during the compression/ power strokes.

Edit. Diesel fan beat me to it.

I just added a quart of 2-cycle oil at fill up. It made my truck way quieter.

Your right...

3rd gens use a pilot injection (small pre-event) of fuel to quiet down the main injection event. Not sure about the after event...

But 2 cycle oil added to the fuel really quiets down a 2nd gen nicely... I'm mixing 1 quart for every 20-25 gallons of fuel. It make the fuel oil ratio about 100:1 to 120:1 Pretty minor amount... I gain roughly 1-2 MPG with the oil.

I'd like to hear more on how 2-stroke oil can quiet the motor? I'm interested in trying it. Is it safe? Thanks

2nd that! What types are you putting in, and what downsides does this have? Does it only quiet the motor (up front) or the sound @ the exhaust tip(back)?

So far I've been doing this for about 10K miles. No problems so far. I'm using NON-SYNTHETIC 2 CYCLE OIL ONLY! There is a problem with trying to burn synthetic oils (leave resdue, depostis etc.)

What it quiets is the diesel knock a bit and it lubes all fuel components... LP, VP44, Injectors, etc.

I'm mixing 1 quart to a fill up of 20-25 gallons of fuel! That makes it about 80:1 to 120:1 which is fairly thin yet. I'm using the same mixture rating as mixing waste engine oil as suggested by Cummins... But at least this oil doesn't have metal, dirt, etc... It clean oil that is ment to burn at about 300-400*F which I'm sure you Cummins will exceed easy.

Check out my page on it...
http://www.frontiernet.net/~mopar197..._cycle_oil.htm

I'm not to much of a fan of PS (Power Service) now since there is a few articles about it containing alcohol solvents. This is to help with gelling... Not good on the VP44 with the ULSD coming out...

You get the same results with Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) if you add a full quart to a 20 gallon fillup. Once again a clean oil...

As for test rigs... I've tested this on...

DODGE CUMMINS, FORD POWERSTROKE'S, and CHEVY 6.5L DIESEL

All vehicles responded the same way... Reduced diesel knock and slight improvement in performance. (CHEVY really improved!)

So what about when I go to Breckenridge and the temp drops? Will the 2 cycle help prevent gelling? What about the ULSD, will this have something in it to help w/ gelling?
Thanks for the info!

I don't think the 2-stroke would help the gelling part, in fact it might make it a little harder to start when it's cold if you put to much in......not positive but it might.

Great...and I use Power Service. What should I do to prevent gelling in the MTNS?

I've been down to 0*F without any problems starting (runing without 2-Cycle oil). I've never needed anything so far for gelling...

As for with 2 cycle oil added its going to be a trial run for me... I'll keep you guys posted and let you know...

The main reason it's quieter is the lack of an injection pump like on your "99". Adding two stroke oil will quieten it down some. As posted earlier, do not run synthetic two stroke oil.
