Same turbine, same housing= ~same boost threshold.

The stg 1 has a lighter rotation so it will spin up faster once it's already making boost, but the onset of boost is the same.

You can get a cam for 500ish (f1's are 488,, local guy here has a grind for 525) and if you can do the install it will be fairly cheap. Even if you cant do the install it wont cost anymore than many of aftermarket turbos and less than some. Though it wont be cheaper than swapping in someones older hy that you could pick up for cheap depending on the fab work you would need to do. If you rarely go above 2k rpms you wont need to worry about springs etc either. A side benefit is you might see an mpg increase as well.

+1.

The factory Cam on these engines is actually designed to encourage reversion in the name of creating a form of EGR. The factory cam is designed for durability first and emissions second. Performance is about 99th on the list.

Even a mild aftermarket cam should be a decent improvement because the specs are formulated from the priority of performance and MPG instead of OEM considerations.

Anybody ever run the stage 1?

I would go stage 2, I liked how responsive it was. The garrett stage 2 down pipe is pretty restrictive. The stage 3, is actually a pretty nice kit. I bet it will spool with a HX-35 turbo and support well into the 500 rwhp area. These turbo do bark more than the Holset on shifting.

My garrett 3782R/BTH-3b combo, I could break the tires loose on hard wot spool-up.

If you can find a turbo that spools fast than an HY35 I will be very suprised.

so my best bet would be to swap out for a stock hy-35 with the stock inducer size? i want to keep the drive pressure up correct? i was thinking a small housing with a big comp. wheel would yeild the best low-end boost but it doesnt work like that? i was alrdy looking into some towing cams and maybe some of those mach 1.6's? my turbo expertise is null so ill have to start learning myself...

The hy on my 01 would break the tires from a standing start with a tight convertor. Power braking a little with the he twins it will blow the tires all the way threw first. I'm just guessing but I'd say the he will spool alot faster than a hx but a hair slower than the hy.
The ball bearing turbos are suppose to be fast but out of my price range.

I've ran the little HY-35 to start, yes it fast spool, but thats about it. EGT's and drive pressure are higher than acceptable if you plan on put the fuel into it. I ran 90's rwhp sticks with that turbo. Yes it work, but the turbo went from grey to bronze to dark brown fast. Then it carboned up heavy, and then it bounced into the scrap bin.
