Question About Injectors--

I have a 99 dodge, 3/4T with Banks Level 5 Big Hoss, 4" exhaust and a hybrid hx40 w/12cm exhaust housing. Looking to upgrade the injectors. The truck is used mainly as a daily driver--I do tow a 6000lb camper around 10 times per year. I was looking at Don M's website and was curious as to which injectors would work the best. Right now, truck will put out 40psi boost. I can stand some low boost smoke--but I don't want to spray for mosquitoes.

Welcome to the site. You will find lots of good info here too. My recomendation for figuring out what injectors you want is to call Don M or Piers or both and tell them EXACTLY what you want out of your truck and they will not steer you wrong.

MACH 1.5's from Don will give you a nice bump if your injectors are stock now, and be almost smoke free for towing. My 2.0's are easy to drive around the smoke but I only haul heavy...don't tow. That's w/ an automatic.
Would not go any higher than 2.0's, and then, only if your a stick.
Stay with Don M's injectors...all EDM's are not the same!

Good advice from rjohnson.

From what I can tell, the Mach 1.5s are the best injector money can buy in terms of efficiency. It almost seems like they are Don's personal favorites!

Your 40psi of boost is probably from the turbine housing being way too small. You have enough air for a 16cm housing.

With that breathing improvement, I'd be comfortable towing with 2.0s. If no altitutde, you can go a hair bigger maybe.

rjohnson,

My injectors are stock. I've been looking at everybodies injectors--diesel dynamics, ats, etc. & after reading quite a few of the forum boards, both here and other sites, Don's injectors seem to come out on top. Seems alot of people are not real familiar with the banks big hoss level 5 module so that is why I've been asking for input on injector size. It's similar to the edge comp version--160hp & 320tq except there is no adjustment. I was thinking mach 2's were the highest I could go, altho my transmission has been upgraded ( I own a transmission shop) to handle the extra power.

HOHN,

Thanks for the reply. The consesus does seem to be the mach 1.5's. Don pm'd me earlier and altho he didn't know the banks system, he thought the 1's or 1.5's would be good. If I move to a larger exhaust housing, won't I just be losing some spool up speed compared to the 12cm housing? I realize that I will gain power on the top end by going with the larger exhaust housing, but my truck is still limited to 95mph.

With your 160 hp chip and smallish housing on our turbo, you will be getting into (with bigger injectors)that delicate area of balancing power and EGTs.
Do you have gauges?
With your chip and MACH 2.0's you will probably want to enlarge your turbine housing or back out of the throttle to keep EGT's down. The good news is, with those injectors and your chip, I don't think you'll lose much (if any) spoolup with a 14 or even 16 cm housing.

Suggestion: Go to User CP in header...Edit Profile. Fill in truck info under signature so all can see what you have when you post. Allows for more informed answers to your questions.

rjohnson,

I have gauges--boost, egt & trans temp. Right now, on a full throttle run on level ground I'll see 1250-1300 @ max boost. When pulling the trailer I see about the same egt's when climbing a grade--but only if I'm towing @ 65-70mph. If I'm towing around 55-60mph up a grade I need to cancel overdrive and play with the throttle. My truck has 3.54 gears so that plays into the equation also. I have been thinking about moving to a 14cm housing but was worried about to much turbo lag.

Injectors and your chip will provide more than enough fuel to spool your turbo as quickly, even with a bigger housing. I just went to a bigger housing on my B-1 turbo and lost no spoolup at all due to fact I was previously overfueled.

14 vs 16cm housing...I don't know? Need some HX-40 experts to answer that but I suspect the 16 will be best for all around driving.
I would guess Mach 1.5's will probably add 150-200* EGT's. The increased power is really sweet!

With Don M's injectors it's easier than ever to handle smoke...just takes some re-educating on how you drive but easy to get use to.
And constantly having to monitor EGT's while driving gets old fast...for me anyway.
Good Luck!

rjohnson,

I'm going to call the shop that built my turbo and see about upgrading to a larger housing. I agree, having to watch egt's is not fun at all. And thanks for the advice on the sig.
