Question Pyrometer Install Help

Hi, I'm new to this page. I have an 02 Ram 2500 w/ a 24valve Cummins. I'm wanting to install my new pyrometer but I have a question before I start. The instructions tell me to completely remove my exhaust manifold. However, when I was browsing this page last night I saw a detailed install procedure w/ pictures and the man did not remove the exhaust manifold. So my question is how important is it to remove the manifold? How much of a risk do I run of destroying my impellor? Thanx!

Many people have successfully drilled and tapped the manifold on the truck. They drill slowly and grease the drill and tap to catch the shavings, cleaning and regreasing frequently. If you're really nervous, get a gasket set and pull the turbo off before you drill. That way you can reach in the manifold and make sure you got all the shavings without a greasy mess. It's 6 bolts, 3 clamps, and an oil line, no big deal really.

No need to remove the manifold. Myself...I'd remove the turbo or break it loose enough to install a barrier.

It all depends on how confident you are about getting all the shavings out. The smart thing to do is to remove the turbo, but I'd say that ~75% of people who have done the install didn't do it, myself being one of them. I was extremely careful when drilling and tapping (w/ grease, of course), and I spent over 20 mins fishing out shavings w/ a magnent. So far so good, as most who take their time and get the job done right the 1st time. Good luck.
