Pyro gauge

Just received my autometer pyro gauge today and the reading on it was already a tad over the 300 degree mark. Is it supposed to be like this, or do I need to return it?

Re:Pyro gauge

I don't know for sure but these things are weird, when I turn mine off it sometimes goes to the other side of zero. I would try it and if its wrong send it back then.

Re:Pyro gauge

It may be normal, the tach I put in my Ranger would always stop at 500 rpm's after i shut the truck off ??? I'd say wire it up and see how it acts.

Re:Pyro gauge

Mine was like that when I got it. Hooked it up and it zeroed right out. Been working perfect ever since, It may have something to do with how they test them, since they do not have a temp sender in them, they rely on the signal sent by the sender. Perhaps they had it tested at 300 when they broke the circuit leaving the gauge resting where it is.
I would try it, if you have a problem I had excellent results with Autometers service department, I am certain they will set it straight.

Re:Pyro gauge

You could just hook 12 volts up to it quick and see if it zero's- then maybe put a lighter on the probe and see if the temp rises and will rezero after it cools. You wouldnt even have to install it to try. They need power hooked up to read anything.

Re:Pyro gauge

Right on, I'll hook it up to some power and give it the heat test. I'm sure it's o.k. Thanks all.
Any body know what size drill bit I need to tap my 2 1/6 autometer pyro?

Re:Pyro gauge

Welcome to the site Garz,
I wondered the same thing when I got my Auto Meter gauges. At that time, we had a member on the site who worked for AM and I sent her an email asking the same question. Here is a copy of the email.

"Dennis D. Tway" wrote:
Hello,
My name is Dennis, and I had seen some of your posts on the Dodge-Diesel.Org web site which, somehow I missed when you had originally posted. Sorry I missed welcoming you to the site. The reason I contacted you, is because I purchased 3 AutoMeter gauges and A-pillar mount from Summit Racing a few weeks ago and I have not hooked them up yet. However, I was noticing that the pyrometer needle is setting on about 100 degrees already. Will this come down to zero, once all the wiring is hooked up, or do you think there may be a problem that I should address with Summit. Please realize that I'm just looking for information so that I can return it before I get it installed. Any advice or opinion would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dennis D. Your site is a great wealth of information to me, as I work closely with our engineering department, and many magazines to inform customers on the use of our products. To do that, I need to know the customers and what their needs are!

The needle of the pyrometer will not zero out and sitting around 100 is the natural resting area of the pointer. When the gauge is connected, and the ignition is turned on, the pointer will move to reflect the temperature read by the probe. When the ignition is turned off, it will drop back to a resting point again. Also, each time the ignition is turned off, the pointer may actually rest in a different spot. So, it sounds like you have a good gauge! If you ever have any trouble though, let me know, and I can have problem items repaired or replaced--maybe a little quicker than if you just sent it, or tried to go through Summit. Let me know if you have any more questions, as you go through the installation. All the instructions, and other tech tips are available on the website too: www.autometer.com

Feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions. Also, I may need to contact you, or post questions when I write articles on product applications. The diesel market is a little new to me. I have been involved in NHRA drag racing, Winston Cup, and everything in between--but the issues and needs of the diesel truck market, I'm still learning! My contact information should be at the bottom of this page...

Good Luck on the Install!!

Cyndie Nelson
--
Cynthia Nelson
Media Relations Coordinator/Technical Writer
Auto Meter Products, Inc.
413 W.
