Pulling cross country...what mods?

We will be pulling a 24 ft. 5th wheel converted to gooseneck in a week or so, from coast to coast and back again, with our '99 2500 QC 4X4 AT. It's all stock except for the 4" exhaust we put on it. We have no guages or anything yet.

We have limited $$ to do anything to the truck before we go, so I'm wondering what might be the most important thing to do. I'm of course very concerned about getting the best mileage possible while preventing problems from occuring with the tranny, turbo, etc. temp-wise. Then there's all the lift pump trouble I've heard about. So where to begin?

I've been wanting to put an aFE air intake system in. We have no guages, though, so should we do the egt guage and fuel pressure guage? I like the idea of the perormance programming units that such as Superchips or Edge EZ to maximize mileage and AT shifting, but I get the idea that you need to do guages and other mods before doing those.

So, given what our truck will be going through hauling, what to do first?!

TIA

I would do gauges - EGT & tranny temp at a minimum. If you can swing it after that, a BHAF, or intake kit.

Like Eskimo said those two gauges you will be going over mountains and the EGT will climb fast and your Tranny will get hot so to control the temps you need to know what they are.....don't be bashful about pulling over to the side of the road to let your Tranny cool....EGT you can control with your throttle foot
