Preparation for performance mods.

Okay I am new to this forum and would be appreciative of any help for the questions I am about to ask. I am the proud owner of a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 automatic and Cummins equipped of course. My trucks warranty is about to expire and I figure that if I have to pay for any repairs or service work that has to be performed I may as well do a few modifications that I was afraid to do because of the warranty. I have already puchased an edge ez box, AFE air intake, and 4" exhaust. I am now interested in installing a set of higher flow injectors. My question is when do I need to worry about my stock lift pump and injection pump? And also should I do any upgrades to my transmission and if so what upgrades? I dont do any pulling any more and I dont drive like an idiot, I do like to open up my Cummins engine on occasion though. I always maintenance my truck on a regular basis and have 70,000 trouble free miles so far. I plan on hanging on to this truck for a while so I plan on keeping my modifications mild. As I stated earlier any input would be appreciated. Thanks, John.

Its never too soon to worry about your IP/LP. Get a set of gauges on there, and you can atleast see if you need to upgrade your fuel system. Keep your fuel pressure above 5 psi at WOT, although 8-10 would be prefered.

If you're going to keep it mild (good luck), a converter and valve body would probably hold you over. The big 3 seem to be Suncoast, DTT, and Goerand, but theres lots out there. Do a search, you'll have tons of reading. Check out Big Blue's posts, he went quite a ways on a TC and VB.

It all depends on hor high you want to go with injectors. A set of RV275's is a cheap upgrade, and is good for roughly 40 hp. Or go to a set of F1 Mach injectors. Mach 1.6 injectors are popular, as they are clean, and are good for atleast 95 hp. They come at a price, but they are quality. Another option is getting a set of nozzles for your stock injectors. Need to take your stockers apart to put the new ones on, and getting their pop off pressures checked wouldn't be a bad idea. Quite a bit cheaper than a full bodied injector though. Hope that helps a bit.

Start worrying about your fuel system as soon as your warranty expires - - that's when things fail right??
Tranny upgrades are always worth while even on a stock rig although you can usually get away with an EZ. At minimum and assuming the tranny is still in servicable condition a good billet TC, billet flexplate and a good VB kit or performance replacement are certainly called for. If you plan on adding more power (that's pretty much a given) a billet input, extra clutches etc... are also a must.

hello, this is for jpz67, i also have the same truck but w/ 6spd trans. about your warranty running out. i have 84k now but a few miles back my injector pump went out, it would stop working while driving at about or between 40-50 mph then then pickup again after a few seconds. and one time when i started it up blew white smoke and spit/sputter until warmed up. after that i decided to take it to the dealer and they told me two things was wrong, yes the injector pump and the float on the fuel pump in the tank. the injector pump was covered under warranty, fortunately because it cost $1200 and the float was not but showed a code so i dicided to tackle it myself, what a pain! sure enough it was warn out, its made of lite material. i don't know what caused this but you may want to have it checked out or you will pay.
and by the way i am a new member and i enjoy reading other members problems and suggestions. go for the upgrades!

Actually Tyler just had the VB and a stock TC.

And given the mild increase you want, especially since you don't beat your truck, or to heavy, you don't really need the billet input IMO.

As far as your fuel system goes, it's not a matter of "if" your LP is going to fail, it's when. The first mod I would look at would be an aftermarket pump such as the FASS or Walboro. I have the FASS, and love it. I installed it myself and it cost less than the dealer wanted to put that junk in the tank pump in. Personally I would do this first. Before you even install guages. Yes, the gauges are neccessary, but they'll only tell you when the LP is in the process of dying, they cannot help you prevent it. The only true way to protect the IP from the LP is to replace it.

Also welcome!

With the EZ and Bosch 275 injectors (40 more hp) you will be close to the edge of what your stock tranny can handle.... depending on how strong it is right now!
Lots of variation on stock auto trannys.
The problem with the 275's is most get bored with them very quickly.

I would suggest (after gauges) do something with your tranny. If your sure you won't want more that an extra 100 hp +/-.... just get a valve body ($400-500). Can always do more later if the urge hits. Big Blue ran up to 430 HP for a long time on just a DTT valve body. Talk to Stephen at ... http://www.dieseltrans.com/ ........or.....
PM me if your anywhere near Dallas...DTT has an excellent installer on the south side!

Than you have some room for decent sized injectors... like Mach 1.6's from F-1!
http://www.f1diesel.com/injectors24.html

Gauges will monitor your fuel system and an upgrade is not required till about 375 hp.... if you just add a big line kit for better flow till then.

Your next weakest link ( if wanting more hp) will be that small HY-35 turbo and the higher EGT's the lack of air will produce. DO ADD the turnbuckle to your turbo with the EZ. (do a seach on this). Helps keep egt's cooler.

Good Luck!

Thanks everbody. I have been doing some talking with Scheid diesel and they recommended a converter, the dtt 5 star I beleive? And as far as my ip/lp the Fass fuel system was advised. I think my next purchase will be boost, pryometer, and fuel pressure gauges along with the Fass fuel system. Does anybody know of another reputable converter, I mean this one that I mentioned is around 1500.00 dollars, Ouch! I would like to get about another 75-100 hp out of the injectors I buy so if a converter or valve body is what I need so be it. Thanks, John.

We installed a Vulcan LP relocation kit yesterday and it is a very nice kit. not too expensive and you can use the stock LP just move it to the frame. If you have the in tank pump you will need to get the new suck tube. We had this and had to drop the tank to do it, but my lift helped out a whole lot.
Ask B4wheeler if you have any questions where to get it. Fass is great from what i hear just really expensive.
Evreything Diesel related is over priced anyways. So get used to it. Jegs has a lot of Diesel stuff on it that is where i got my TC and VB.
