Pre-Turbo Thermocouple, Too long for 2003

After several delays I am now preparing to install my Pyrometer. I purchased the ISSPRO R3607T pre-turbo gauge kit which comes with the R650S short thermocouple. The compression ring on the thermocouple came compressed therefore it will not slide. In this position in this position the tip of the thermocouple would reach through the manifold neck above the turbo.

Does anyone know the correct size of brass compression sleeve for this thermocouple?

According to Isspro the short thermocouple has a reach of 1 3/8" from threads to tip. At present mine is over 1 1/2". The thermocouple length is 3 1/8" which seems a bit long for one called short. I checked label for model number and it is the correct number, R650S.

Thanks for suggestions and your help. ???

PerplexedPhil

Make whoever you got it from give you another. They should slide easy for adjusting. Maybe you got one somebody returned. As for adjustments, the tip of the thermocouple should be right in the middle of the exhaust so it doesnt read from any metal surface.

Re:Pre-Turbo Thermocouple, Too long for 2003

Phil,
My compression fitting would allow me to slide back and forth. I put a wire into the drilled hole until it touched the back side of the manifold - - marked it and pulled it out. I then set the depth to split the difference after allowing for the thickness of the drilled metal. I tapped in only far enough so I had a tight fit without pulling down to the shank of the collar. I was about 1 1/4" in past the threads with the tip when installed.

Another thread mentioned their fitting was tight also. ???

Push Rod is the one to know the answer.

Re:Pre-Turbo Thermocouple, Too long for 2003

I have the same problem with the one that came with my X-Monitor. I ended up putting it where the #3 outlet "y's" into the manifold because it was so long. You guys got me worried even more now wondering if I am getting good readings.

I was just thinking that I could get another sleeve and nut and put on behind the one that is their to shorthen it up. That would save having to cut the old sleeve off to get the nut off.

So here I sit secound guessing my EGT's ???

On a happy note the Scotty III showed up today, thanks Rod

Re:Pre-Turbo Thermocouple, Too long for 2003

I purchased from DTR store which is not currently in business. Other than being very long for being called short, I believe I have a solution, unless of course someone out there could rangle and exchange for a 658S as PushRod suggested.

I was able to remove the compression sleeve from the thermocouple by carefully filing the sleeve until it was paper thin. The thermocouple is not marked in any way. I can now install a new compression sleeve and adjust the thermocouple to the center of the manifold.

Phil, I could mic mine for you, but I have an autometer and don't have a clue if it is the same size or not. It does look about the same, but without a comparison in the photo I could not really be certain.

If you want me to mic the outside diameter of my probe, I will be happy to, let me know.

FormerlySierraLary
Lary Ellis (Top)
I looked through my collection and found an identical brass compression nut, The one on the thermocouple is identical in every. It is a compression nut for 1/4" copper tubing. Ithen went to Ace Hardware and bought a pkg of compression sleeves, three for $1.38 with tax. Slid on on the thermocouple shaft and the fit is perfect. Furthermore, the new sleeve is identical to the old sleeve. I now have an adjustable not so short thermocouple. I can't see why it won't work OK since the thermocouple tip is where the heat must be applied to work properly, Physics 101.

Thanks for the reply and offer, Lary.

IHopeIHaveaSolutionPhil
Yea, your right. The tip is where it reads from. Thats why you need to keep it away from any metal surfaces. I got the short version. I cant remember how long it was though but I don think it was 3". It was pretty short and also adjustable.
Another thing to do is when you tap the threads, make sure you tap only far enough that the threads dont protrude into the manifold.

Re:Pre-Turbo Thermocouple, Too long for 2003

I have an Autometer probe that I am going to install (pre turbo)this weekend. It doesn't have the compression fitting. More like a washer welding in place so there is only one hight posistion to set it to once you tighen the bolts together. Has anyone installed a probe like this without bottoming out the probe. I may just be nerves but I don't want to get half way and relize that I now have a hole in the manifold and need another guage.

thanks for any help

Re:Pre-Turbo Thermocouple, Too long for 2003

I have Autometer and the probe is long with a dedicated fitting position. I went and got the same brass compression fittings that were mentioned here so I could pull out the probe for a better depth. You may want to go and get a nut and compression sleeve to fit the probe before you install it.

In my photo album I have a picture of the probe installed with a new nut and sleave. I just hung the original nut back on the loom..

Sierra Phil,
If you still want to I will warranty your pyro probe (thermocouple) with Isspro, and send you the right part. Contact me if you need anything.
