If the filter is large enough, then even a 2-mic filter can be used "pre-pump" with no appreciable strain on the pump.

This is where flow ratings for filters get to be very important.

I'm running a Racor 4120 filter with 3/4" ports. Great flow with my 1/2" lines. The filter head has a primer port and button to get rid of are in the system during filter changes.

I also have a 1/2" shutoff valve before the filter. I run either a R120 or R90 10 or 30 micron water/diesel filter.

Racor filters are sometimes difficult to find on the road since they are more expensive than Baldwin and Fleetguard but I have found some Baldwin and Fleetguard filters that work based on my cross-reference chart whick took me a long time to put together.

I'll try and some pics up by the weekend.
