I use the permacool filter and head assy from summit like dieselfarmboy i mounted it on the frame rail real close to the front of the tank. Another thing i like about it their is a manual drain on the filter element. Nice to have if you were suspecting a fuel related problem out on the road such as water and or gas in fuel or maybe gelling real easy to take a sample . The filters are reasonably priced i carry one on board all the time easy to change and it should keep the walbro happy for a long time.

Are you talking about the small galvanized looking filter that goes between the tank and the Fass or HPFP?

Do you guys use a shut off valve before the filter to keep from getting a diesel bath?
I guess you also bump the starter to get the air out of the lines?

here's my setup, it's a racor 2 micron before the lp.
the filter head has a primer built into it.... no on/off valve .I've had this setup for years w/ no problems

You can add a shut off if you like but most are installed with a least a little rubber line between fittings so you just pinch the line to avoid the diesel bath.
Put some known to be very clean fuel in the new filter install and then bump the key to cycle the lift pump 1 or 2 times to purge the air. Fire it up and you are on your way

BUT You have to make sure it has the metal mesh on the inside not the paper element,,They can tell in the Napa book, I will look for the number,,

How much was the NAPA filter? Do they have repalcement inserts?

Thanks! that sounds like the one that came with my HPFP size wise. It's been on the truck since I installed the HPFP back in '04 and I should probably change it out.

Yes The filters look just alike,, I dont like the idea of NOT being able to see the media inside, Paper or metal screen,,,

I decided on the Summit 40 micron. I like the replaceable/cleanable screen. NAPA has a shut of valve $15, plus $5 for hose fittings. Part # 6809 and05705B. I will be using a new AirTex pump, see how it does with my Vulcan kit.
I have gone through (3) Carters in 40 k miles.
So, with the shut off valve, easy to replace whatever in the future.
