Power Edge EZ Box

I need your some honest feedback here, as I'm a new kid on the (Cummings Diesel) block. Seems as though many folks are in favor of the Power Edge EZ as a moderate performance enhancement ... and that's exactly what I'm looking for. I don't plan major bombing of my truck. I just want a little more sizzle. So that's what I'm thinking of doing. One upgrade, an EZ. (might drop the muffler as well, but that's it)

Everyone seems to insist that pyro, boost, and fuel pressure gauges are a must.

My question: If I am only planning to install an EZ, must I install all those guages? Or, can I successfully do without guages w/o any harm by simply using some mature disipline on how hard I push the truck?
Re:Power Edge EZ Box

I ran mine with an EZ without gauges for a couple months.
I don't think its a good idea tho, at least get the EGT gauge so if you start getting to hot you can back off before causing any damage. my 2 cts.

My 2 cents. Keep in mind I am new to this game as well. From what I understand a boost guage is more or less just cool to look at. Sure it tells you when you have turbo probs but so will a lack of power and I don't think you have to worry about this damaging your engine. EGT is a totally different thing. My truck with an EZ and 4 inch exhaust and K&N air (both of which should help reduce EGT) can get to the dangerous temps if I push it hard pulling a trailer or going up a hill.

Just this morning I was pulling my 18 foot enclosed trailer on the interstate that is only about 3500 lb but has a lot of wind drag and I was on fairly flat land trying to get around some trucks before I hit one lane construction and I had it mashed to the floor going about 85 and I noticed the temps getting to high so I had to back off. Bottom line you need an EGT guage or else you risk damaging your truck. It is cheap insurance.

And with the proven unreliability of the transfer pumps on our trucks, a fuel pressure gauge is, in my mind, also a necessity. At the very least, a hand held gauge that you can use to check pressure every couple of weeks should be in your tool box.

On the boost gauge side, you're right about catastrophic failure of the charge air cooler boots causing a power issue, however a pin hole leak, either in the boots, connections, or tank will likely not be felt in the seat of the pants, but a 1 - 2 PSI reduction in typical peak boost can be seen on a good boost gauge.

On this note, an Edge EZ will usually reduce EGTs, even under loaded conditions. Can you run safely without gauges, while running an EZ? Probably, and probably run even safer than you did stock. Should you run without gauges? I don't believe you should.

Rod

Re:Power Edge EZ Box

You should consider an Edge Comp, and not hook up the pump wire. On my HO, the EZ created smoke when you first get on it, and I think the Comp has more adjustments. Being able to "detune" when someone else is driving would be another plus. On gauges, I agree, EGT is really a must. Can you get by without it? Sure. You could also get by without a temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, fuel gauge, and several others. That doesn't make it a good idea!

Re:Power Edge EZ Box

I had a EZ on my 98 auto. There is NOway I'd run any fueling mods without a pyrometer especially if youre pulling anything. You will be amazed how high those egt's climb in a hard pull. Plus, you will prematurely cut off the engine without letting the turbo cool properly. Also, with the auto I wouldnt add a box unless I could afford a tranny rebuild. Hope this helps
Roger

Re:Power Edge EZ Box

As you can see from my signature, I have gauges and the EZ. From my experience, by watching the pyro gauge under various conditions, I could do without the gauges now. If I keep the RPM's up over 2K at WOT, there is never a high EGT. However, if I put my foot in it at sustained low RPM's the EGT climbs fast. Don't get me wrong though, I LIKE the gauges.

He didn't say he could have done without the gauges from day one; he's just saying that now that he has watched the gauges for awhile, he could now get by without. He's also alerting you that depending on how you drive, with a box it IS, repeat IS, possible to get temps too high. Bottom line; gauges before boxes.

Re:Power Edge EZ Box

I have to echo what Push-Rod said. I had a 01 eth/dee with a tripple piller mount, egt, boost, and fuel press. I was worried about the gauges being intrusive, or in the way turning left and such. thats NOT the case. My truck did run cooler with the box (comp/no wire) than without. I woudnt be without the gauges just for diagnostic reasons, boost pressure, FUEL pressure ect. ect. I have a 03 now, and the first thing i'm gonna do is get some gauges, even though I have no power enhancements (yet ;D) FWIW.

Cat Cracker.

Re:Power Edge EZ Box

Rattle Rattle you have a six speed and 4 inch exhaust. Thats a different animal than the stock exhaust and a auto. Dont you think the temps will climb with the stock exhaust and a box. Just my .02
Roger

Re:Power Edge EZ Box

I will add my .02 cents. Get the gauges first, it is well worth the $$ and then you can get a baseline on the perfornamce or your truck. Once you have a baseline you can add what ever box you want. I have run Edge boxes since they came out and I highly reccomend them. You can pick them up used all over and there is nothing wrong with a used box. But here is my advice..get an edge comp and don't hook up the wire. Since this BOMBing thing is very additive you will want more later and then you can hook up the wire. With the comp (with out the pump wire) you have an EZ (no matter what level you run it on).

Also the tranny advice above is good..if you go more than and Ez the plan on tranny work. Its better to do the tranny work before the problems start..that way you don't have to have a rebuild along with the TC/VB.

JR2

By the way I started with 275 injectors, thought that would be enough..hahahah ;D

***edit** Just noticed that you tow....don't ad more than an ez without tranny work.

Re:Power Edge EZ Box

Hello
We have an EZ in our 99 3500 Auto with a EZ. I too say get the gauges. we have the following: EGT, Trans temp and Fuel PSI.
The highest temps we have seen are about 1200 and that is with a 26 ft GN hooked to it. We have not pulled any serious hills or weight with it yet. This summer we hope to have it ready to pull our 5er. We need to buy a new hitch unit.
See Ya
Chris
