Ported head with stock cam

Well I got a line on a place that can port my head for a pretty good price and they are also gonna do my o-rings here in the next couple of months. Would a ported head on a stock cam with my mods hurt me in anyway? I fully plan on doing an H2 cam maybe next year if funds allow but in the meantime I figure while they've got my head for the o-rings they might as well port it out. What do yall think?

Yeah a ported head would deffenitly help out some and if you end up doing the cam it will be even better

i have a ported and polished head with orings runnin on a stock cam. you will definetly notice a difference. the biggest diff i notices was throttle response. it feels like your runnin your smarty on #9 all the time i guess thats the best way i can explain it. also noticed 120F drop in egts. it cant really hurt you, it can only help you in my opinion.

Only thing I'd be cautious of is whether those guys have experience in porting CTD 24V heads. If they do mess it up i'S gonna be expensive. (Just being cautious due to the price you mentioned) Other than that any airflow improvement is a very good thing.

They have lots of experience doing them otherwise I wouldn't even consider taking my head to them.

Here's how I see it for what its worth
First off is this just a light pocket port clean up or a full blown port and flow job?
The ported head will net you little gains with out the cam
Most porting and flow jobs are in the area of 20+ hours work and that equals more cost than a cam.
The cam alone will net your higher HP engine some nice gains in spool up and lower EGTs with out the head work ( Of course the two complement each other) which in turn will allow you to use some bigger sticks
So if its a matter of only being able to afford one right now I would go with the cam first. Its really no big deal to rip the head off down the road to do the port work if you feel you would need the gains. But if your money tree is ripe than hey go nuts

have you looked into extrusion honing at all?? i was thinking about that process the day and how i havn't seen anything here about it. here's a link, these guy's will work injectors too some neat reads in there.http://www.gethoned.com/diesel.php

i really think this is the way to go, the media flows similar to how fuel/air moves , taking out high spots and polishing where it need it. they claim they do anything heads, intakes,exhaust manifolds, they could probally do turbo stuff too. i thought was cool was they want you to send your parts new or old, instead of doing a buy their new , or exchange yours . they also say it's cheaper than conventional porting too. there injector prices were from 33-65 a piece .

extrude honing should only be done after hand porting, and I would never extrude hone a cylinder head... some areas you don't want to touch... others you want to touch a LOT... extrude honing touches all areas equally. I'll pass

As Forrest mentioned, extrude honing isn't really the best for porting a cylinder head..... Let a good experienced porter work on your head, you get what you pay for.

I say if the head's already off and at the machine shop, it's the perfect time to have some work done!

That's kinda what I'm thinking forrest. It's already there why not let them go ahead and port it a little bit.

I don't know just exactly how much they take off and in what areas but I'll find out before I drop my head off with them. If I don't think they can do the porting then I'll just let them do the o-rings.
