Ported Head ?'s
I am just looking for some input for a ported head. This IS going to be my next mod after I install the TST PM3 COMP that is in route. To clarify my future plans:

I will be installing a TST PM3 COMP next week. The rest of the mods are in my sig. Of course the Banks is now gone. I plan on installing 125-150 horsepower injectors to replace my stage 2s. I need to keep EGT's low enough to tow with the 125-150 injectors and my EZ (PM3 will be off of course). I tow very hevy loads long distances.

I would like opinions on where to get a preped head. Also should I get it O-ringed, should I install a larger headgasket, should I install a copper gasket, and who has the best deals?
I thank all ahead of time for the input!!!

Re:Ported Head ?'s
We can take care of you on all that, we offer custom ported & polished heads. But honestly, the best way to get your EGT's down is to spend the same amount of $$$ and get a PDR Hx-40 turbo(we also sell those) with a 4" exhaust system.
I tow with both a VanAaken(similiar to an EZ Edge) and a Powermax3 Comp turned on and operating, level 4 or 5 is perfect, I've also run propane with both boxes on, while towing, and it does help on the EGT. It's awesome.
The net effect of porting and polishing will only gain you about 150 degrees lower EGT, I wouldn't remove the head unless I was going to o-ring the block in order to run twins. give us a call, or email, we'll help ya out !

Re:Ported Head ?'s
You're running an ETH.....you'd better plan on getting the head o-ringed. A thicker head gasket hurts the ETH in performance more than helps. I don't think the results after getting a port and polish job is worth the investment.

Getting more air in, the cooler the better, is the secret to lower egts. Water injection can also help.

Re:Ported Head ?'s
That's true, more air in, cooler air, is about the only way to get the EGT's down. Intake porting helps accomplish that, but as the sole reason for removing the head, I don't think it is worth the cost. Getting it done "on the side", when you have the head removed for other reasons, is worthwhile, though.

How does a thicker head gasket and lowering the compression ??? hurt performance on a ETH? In stock form yes but with boxes and bigger injectors with more boost it can only help.

Ask HeberRam about the thicker head gasket on an ETH. He tried it, and complained about lost performance. Said it wasn't the way to go. Heber experimented a bit trying to stop blowing head gaskets. O-ringing seems to be the only way, except for maybe Don M's copper head gasket, to keep head gaskets from going south on the ETH. I've even heard of it happening to stockers. O-ringing is cheap insurance and piece of mind for any modified ETH.

Porting the intake side of a 24v looks to be a tough deal. Looks like to me that the intake plenum has to be cut off, then welded back on, in order to get into the ports. I'm curious how it's done.

Trying a Piers or DD cam might also be a cost effective way to reduce egts.

Thanks for that,I"m going to talk to steve about that.I have a feeling that it might be something else,I have my head off right now and I have ported the head too.I also have the thicker head gasket too.On porting the intake you only need to clean up the area under the valves, theres not much gain if any on intake porting.

Re:Ported Head ?'s
The reduced CR thing I know works on gassers, but I'm wondering how big a deal it is on these diesels. ????

It may be that Steve's experience with a thicker head gasket is the result of the high altitude around here. 11/1 CR gassers can get by on regular gas here in northern Utah because of the thin air. And big turbos don't work so well, in driveability, because of poor spoolup.

Re:Ported Head ?'s
I talked with that crazy Canadian up north and he recomended a taller headgasket with a ported head. I'm hoping a taller head gasket will also help out a little on the EGT's since the compression will be decreased. I am still shoping around for the best price.
