Pick my turbo for me

I am trying to make my truck into a mean tow rig as that is the main use for the truck. But I am young and still want it to be fast when unhooked. So,as a guy on a limited budget. What would be a good charger to run with some Mach 2's??? and keep egt's in check.I don't think I could afford twins so I guess a big single is my only option. But which one? Also,I have heard alot of bad stuff about the HX-40,what is the deal with that turbo?Because they seem to be cheap compared to the other larger turbos. Thanks for any advise.

I'm not an expert, but I would maybe guess a hybrid Hx40/35?

The standard htb2 with a 12cm housing is an awesome turbo for towing and performance.

Would a 35/40 hybrid be enough to cool a set of Mach 2's towing?Is it really a noticible improvement over a stock HX-35?And isn't a Dodgezilla a 35/40 hybrid?

Caleb, never ran drag comp but it should keep it cool as long as DC isn't set on kill, mine is just a selfmade job I got off a 8.3 cummins and as long as I watch the go pedal it does fine, had upwards of 20k behind it.

And ur right u realy need a clutch when ya go w/those mach 2's

The hybrid should cool mach2's fine. Yes, it's a big difference over a stock hx-35.

Big difference...Yes! And 35/40 hybrids, like the dodgezilla, are very reasonably priced. IF you can afford it...one of the HTB2's from HTT would be even better...more air with equal spoolup.
http://www.htturbo.com/

But you will still have to either back out of the throttle...or turn the Drag Comp down, to control EGT's.

A Drag Comp...with Mach 2's will take ANY single turbo (short of a very laggy HX-55 or a Full B-1) to 1500* in 7-10 seconds at WOT....well before the 1/4 mile pole. And that's empty!

But with the air from a 35/40 it will make a nice set up with plenty of usable towing power.....you just can't use it all!

HX-40's were designed for the steady boost put out by Big Rigs, on the highway. They just don't seem to have the strenght to hold up under our constantly and rapidly changing boost settings....unless you get one redesigned for our CTD's.

I have ran 35/40 hybrids (dodgezilla) b1-2 and 1 hx 40 and now am running a htb2 with a 12cm exhaust housing this turbo on my 01ho with mach 2.2s aand drag comp can tow with box on 2 at 20,000 gross combined weight and never see over 1350 degrees. It makes 40 psi on 2 and with box on 5x5 it makes 53psi with edge boost elbow. From a dead stop on 5x5 i can hit 90mph before reaching 1500 degrees. This is the best single turbo i have ever owned hands down. And does all this with backpresure never over 1 to 1. This turbo also is wastgated through both side of the manifold and not just the three rear cylinders keeping your drive pressure down and your temp way down from what i have noticed.

You've measured backpressure??? Or are you repeating what someone told you? I simply ask because I've always been told that when something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Is this a reference to the Super 40??

The Super 40 appears to offer a lot of bang-for-the buck, but real world testing on these things is about as common as a poultry dentist.

Also curious about this. Is that 1:1 at 53 psi boost? My B-1, with an EX-4 housing, measured 1:1 at 45 psi boost but jumped to 65 psi Turbine Inlet Pressure at 51 psi boost. I would not expect a HTB2-12 to be better?

JH - My comments about HX-40 turbos came from Don M. and refered to earlier stock Holsett HX-40's, not those reworked by Piers, etc.

AHA-- I wasn't sure what ya meant by "designed for our rigs".

I think even a tweaked 40 is still not good. A guy here in Cheyenne popped TWO PDR40s at only about 470hp. Thus, he switched to a B1.

I think I'll probably end up with some kind of Schwitzer/BW frankenstein. Right now, I.I. is top of the list.
