Performance Cam Swap?

I was looking at this cam that Piers Diesel Research is selling:

http://www.piersdiesel.com/DodgeCamshaft.htm

These are their claims for it:

-Longer HP & torque curve
-1-2 MPG increase in fuel economy
-100* drop in EGT's
-Reduced turbo lag, faster turbo spoolup
-Improved throttle response
-Approximately 20% reduction in smoke

They want almost $600 for it. Anybody running one? They are claiming 10-12 hours to do the swap. Is it a lot easier to do with the engine out of the truck? Alternatives would be appreciated.

This for an intercooled 1st gen.

I'm sure it would be a lot easier to do it with the engine outside the truck. Most everything is. I don't know anyone with a 1st gen running it, but everyone I know with a 2nd gen that's running them loves them.

Call PDR and tell them what you have, where you're putting it, and what you want it to do. They will not steer you wrong.

Where else would you put a cam besides in an engine?

Mailbox post?

No, wait, that's where the crankshaft goes.

I'm pretty sure he means the way the truck is setup, since it's not your typical Cummins rig.

If the $600 dollar cam seems expensive you have not seen the one from Diesel Dynamics.. it's $1500 if I remember correctly.

Ouch! This is the first project that's still worth more than I've spent on it. And I'd like to keep it that way, so $1500 cams are a no-go.

If I'm correct though, the Diesel Dynamics cam is a brand new cam where as the Pier's is reground.

PDR has reground and new camshafts for 24v and 2nd gen 12v's. The 1st gen camshafts are regrinds only.
Haven't heard of any other company that has 1st gen performance camshafts for sale.

from what I read there the cam is same as stock grind for the 1st gens so don't think the performance is bumped up like your thinking I'd call them and get all the info you desire. thats my 2 pesos

It features higher lift, longer duration, and better lobe separation. These improvements have shown a 30% increase in air flow during flow testing on the bench. Best of all the design is mild enough to not require fly-cut pistons or other modifications.

Our reground factory cams start from a stock core. Each cam is checked and inspected, then precision ground to PDR specifications

I don't know. Sounds like they regrind the factory core to their own specs for the 1st gens.

Someone is giving you bad info.
I was the tester for the PDR 1st gen camshaft design and I can tell you they are not stock. We did 3 camshaft swaps on my truck before we settled on the final grind. I no longer have that engine with the 1st gen camshaft in it as I sold it to a member on this site that goes by Nuttymopar (Scott). I'm sure he won't mind telling you how he likes the camshaft and what differences it makes for him.

If PDR wants to supply the grind. I can supply the cam blank. I have a pile of camshaft blanks sitting here that have never been ground. They are in the semi finished state and have the fuel pump lobe. I dont have a 1st gen grind. PDR does.

The offer is open if it helps.

Don~
