Re:Over paint rock guard

I've not read about any Ram'mers doing it yet, but 3M makes a clear film called Scotchcal. Xpel relabels it for their headlight protection kits. Its a clear film that when applied correctly, is almost invisible. I've been thinking of having the whole front end done when the truck is new, so it will never have any rock dings or chips. They typically do it up to about 4 inches onto your hood. Anyone tried it yet? 8)

Re:Over paint rock guard

Many of the new Vipers have the 3M product on the whole front end. It comes up the hood about 12" or so. You have to look rear close to see where it ends. Good stuff. I am putting it on the edge of my running boards, on the front of the dually fender, at the leading edge of my quarter panel and some on the front of the truck. It is used on the leading edge of airplane wings. Should do well on the headlights, too.

Fiverbob, greetings from University and Lockwood ridge! 8) I wonder if I've seen you romping around.

Are you going to put on the film yourself, or have it installed?

I've gotten a 4" roll of the 3M stuff; not hard to put on, but it does take practice!!

I put strips down the top of the bed sides before the cap went on; easy to put down until I got to the back, compound curve....

Not too neat, but at least it's covering the paint.

I'll put some on the front, too.

Rene

Re:Over paint rock guard

I've been looking for some of this to apply to the front of my clear coated Denver Off Road bumper. Once the clear coat is compromised by a stone, salt spray will get behind the coating and attack the aluminum. Geno's sells 4" wide rolls of Scotchcal, but I need 8" or 12" and am having difficulity finding it. Does anybody know of an outlet for these widths?

In this same forum, I have posted, complete with pictures, my experience with a Rustoleum spray on product that looks very effective in protecting against impact or other types of damage - it comes in colors, or ina CLEAR, that might deliver what you are looking for...

I was looking at that thread, Gary. I'll have to check that out as well. Thanks.
