Opinions of an HX 40 on a 24 valve
Ok so here is the scoop I have a twin setup on the classifieds, and a guy locally came and looked at them,, He has an HX 40 on his 12 valve, and it has like 3000 miles on it. I dont know a whole lot about different turbos but we were talking about a swap and some cash on top of the turbo
I have a 24 vavle with an 5 inch exhaust, an afe filter /air box delete and intake manifold (aftermarket) and a edge typs of older superchip,
not looking to set the world on fire H.P. wise because of the stock tranny
when I do it'll be with a 6 speed
so what'd you guys think, ?

With my setup, its a little too lazy on the bottom end. If I didnt have 4.10's I think my exhaust temp would be too high towing on the highway. I heard they are good for 375-450Hp.
Is it the old style HX40 or is it updated?

I Talked to HTT about an HX40 just last month and they said dont do it. Too slow to spool and a common problem is a broken rod if barked too much. Which barking will sometimes happen that is inevitable.
And after riding in my brothers 3rd gen that is stock with an HX40 everyday for work the last few years, even with his smarty his turbo lag is way too much for my liking.

Also a HX40 on a stock truck is pointless. Also what size exhaust housing on that 40?
A hx40 is a good turbo used in the correct application on a moderately fueled truck used for towing. It is also cheaper than one of the s300 variants that HTT is selling.

I personally really like my HX40. They will support 400-450hp reliably. John Porterfield dyno'd 540hp on one. Him and McMopar also ran 12's with HX40's.
In my opinion, they are an underrated turbo. They can be bought for cheap. I bought mine used for about the same price as a used HX35. They are great for towing, and they spool pretty decent along with flowing pretty decent in the higher RPM.
I tow with mine with an auto, a tight converter, and 3:55's. Its a little laggy out of the hole, but once it lights, It does great. I have no problem at all with EGT's while towing, and it spools pretty good.
They will break the shaft if you bark them a lot from what i have heard. But, its not too hard to get used to rolling out of the throttle instead of just letting off all at once. Barking isnt good for any turbo. I have barked mine a few times with no damage, but i dont do it often at all. Also, keep the boost under 40psi. I run mine about 38psi. It will live much longer that way. If you do those 2 things, an HX40 will be a great turbo for the $$.

I'd say add 50 hp injectors --rv275's-- and a HX40 with a 14 waste gated exhaust and you will be very happy.
When I had one it had a 16 housing, and It was slow to light off but I could tow all day if I kept the r's up. I had 80 hp injectors with it.
I look back at the dollars spent and wish I would of stayed there.

thanks for all the replies I think I will do it and a set of injectors, I am not really in a habit of barking the turbo although it has happened before

I have heard multiple times, people talking about a 14cm housing for an HX40, but i have personally never seen one... I always thought they didnt make anything smaller than a 16cm?
I can have full boost with my HX40 at 1600rpm, so I feel like it does pretty well. It will build 10psi by 1200rpm, so it does pretty good even in the lower RPM, although its hard to beat an HX35 for towing.

It isn't my intent to hijack this thread, but there is a lot of good commentary on HX-35 and HX-40. Any opinions on how the BD Super B turbo compares to the HX-35 & 40? I want to upgrade from my stock HY-35 and the BD Super B kit and PDR HX-35 hybrid are comparable in price. All feedback appreciated.

The BD Super B is an excellent turbo for towing, daily driving, and should support up to 450hp. It will probably get a little warm at that level, but it will handle it just fine. The Super B doesent have any shaft problems barking it, and should handle 45psi no problem if you want to run it that high.
It is not a very big turbo, but performs well for its size, and is MUCH better than the PDR hx35 in my opinion. I think the kit comes with a 4 inch downpipe, but other than having to change to a 4 inch downpipe and exhaust, it should bolt right up.

The problem with HTT's opinion is that its biased.

Speaking of BD turbo's, I know there a little smaller, but what are the spec sizes on the super B single and special?

The Super B is a 57/65/14
The Super B Special is 64/71/14
Big difference in those turbo's.
And just to clarify, NO 3rd gens had an HX40 stock. The turbo you speak of is either an HE341cw or HE351cw. These are both completely different animals from the HX40, and both of those should spool VERY fast with extra fuel because of the 9cm exhaust housing.

huh, thats strange. Maybe it was just my brothers truck then. Cause its spool is anything but fast.
I understand this comparison is very differant but, my HY-35 spooled faster without added fuel , then his 3rd gen ever did; stock Or with his Smarty.

The best way I have come up with to explain what an HX40 is like is think of it like going out and buying a VCR today. Does it work? yes.. is there newer more efficient technology out there? Yes.
They do spool quite slow and are prone to breaking shafts. Other than that for some people they are going to be a cost effective choice. If your truck is a hot rod then you can make it work. If you tow and tow heavy there are going to be better options out there.
