Operation Dana 80 Axle Swap

Picked up a Dana 80 with 4.10 Limited Slip.. Will be putting it in on Thursday.

Since I can't transfer the disc brakes off my Dana 70, I am putting high performance Carbon Kevlar shoes on it along with the upgraded cylinders from EGR.
We'll see how she holds up sled pullin'

I am just upgrading because I plan to pull nearly every weekend this year and from what I've heard, the 70 probably won't take it, at my horsepower level.

I have come to hate 70's. My first one went, and this one has already loosened up considerably from the tight converter IMO. With a tight converter it jams pretty hard into reverse, and it seems like it is loosening it up. Going into drive isnt near as bad? I lowered the idle. Its really to low to suit me, but if it will help my rear end live then whatever. I know one thing. If this thing dies again, an 80 with limited slip is going in it. Another thing I cant stand is open rear differentials. They suck for anything but dry road. At least I have limited slip. It will go till it breaks anyways BTW bobcat. Does your truck hit reverse hard? What is your idle at? I had my idle at 850 or so warm, and in wet grass it would spin the back tires just putting it into reverse. Im wondering if the transgo has too high of pressures at idle and in reverse? Oh well. Good luck with the swap.

Yep, my truck hits reverse HARD. Dave Goerend, when riding in my truck exclaimed "well she has reverse!" when I put it gear.

I have my idle set at "the line below 1000RPM" on the tach

Drive engauges just fine, no slamming into gear.

Thats exactly how mine is. I like how it hits, but I dont think the rear end does. Drive is also the same on mine. No slamming, and pretty smooth, but like I said. Reverse is almost scary sometimes. I usually just roll out of the driveway backwards every morning instead of putting it in reverse Oh well. Glad to hear that mine isnt the only one

Engagement of drive and reverse is very smooth with my Suncoast valve body and Axiom converter.

I'm going to use my rims that I already have.. Should only be about 1-1.5" wider on each side.

BTW if you are wondering why it isn't done yet, when they tore into the differential to check out the cluthes, they discovered that there were no linings on the clutches anymore, so I had some overnighted to the shop.. I have a sled pull on Saturday!

Axiom is a huge transmission company and supply transmission kits, converters, hardparts, blah blah, to trans shops.

They offer two performance converters for our autos.
Both have a billet plate, furnace brazed fins, billet stator 500rpm below stock stall, and come in a single disk version rated for 750ftlbs and a tripple disk rated for 1000ftlbs.

They are essentially a generic version of the big name converters.
