O.K. Dumb Question.... Head Studs - LOOK Inside :)

What is the difference between studs and bolts?

I know studs hold more PSI but how do you install them?

Do regular bolts stretch?

At what PSI (boost) are the stock head bolts and head gasket good for?

Are they just screwed down to a certain depth?

What size does a 12v use?

Any other info you can give me?

I know studs hold more PSI but how do you install them? stud gets screwed in into the block once the head is on, then a nut and washer go on top

Do regular bolts stretch? yes, studs can stretch too, but its takes alot more force

At what PSI (boost) are the stock head bolts and head gasket good for? as a rule of thumb, about 45psi...but I have heard of some DHRA race trucks running stock HG and bolts, with lots of proper retorques at 60,70 and even 80+ PSI

Are they just screwed down to a certain depth? head bolts go in until the factory torque spec is met, studs go all the way to the bottom of the hole and back a half turn so they arent bottomed out. more threads of engagement for strength

What size does a 12v use? 12mm

Any other info you can give me? If you put studs in, be sure torgue them properly and prolly check/retorque them once a year after that unless you are running high HP and high boost, then check them more often
please see my above comments

Fire-ringing removes this ring from the gasket and places a large and heavy ring in the block or head to seal the cylinder. O-ringing is when you cut a groove (usually in the head around each cylinder) and put a small wire in the groove. When torqued down this ring which sticks out of the head a few thousandths of an inch put alot of extra clamping force on the fire ring part of the gasket, which heals to seal the cylinder better in high boost, high power engines.

Whats it do?
Here is the stock gasket stuck to my head, that ring around the valves is the fire ring, i had pressure blowing past that fire ring which in turn ripped parts of the gasket out as the pressure escaped into the coolant and oil system. See where the orange part is missing...

Here you can see the o-rings i had done on my head around each cylinder

Getblown5.9 hit all the nails on the head, with pics too! lol. Whenever you install studs make sure to bottom-tap the threads in the block, you will get an extra 1/2-2 turns out of the stud if not more...
