new truck - what to do to it?
I just bought a 2001 quad cab 4x4 cummins and am wanting to do some mods to it to increase performance. I am wanting to do the cheaper stuff first and then see if I am happy or if not possibly add more later. What do you recommend doing first?

Stick or auto?<br> I would start with an Edge Comp and Bullydog 5's, just kidding. <br> If its an Auto you could go with an EZ for about 50 to 60 extra HP. But much more and you will need trans upgraded.<br> If its a 6spd HO, I hear a set of DD2's work great for an extra 80 or so HP.

bdog: STOP !! STOP!!. Do not proceed any further. You are in great danger of catching a terrible disease. It's insidious in how it attacks you. You get little things first, then that's not enough, you need more, then it's too late. You spend hours before the computer learning ways to BOMB your baby. If you value your soul, you will proceed no further. I was like you once a long time ago, innocent, happy in the purchase of my first diesel, merrily whistling tunes as I drove the freeways, not knowing about the terrible disease. Then I fell in with a bad crowd (they go by the name of BOMBers). I struggled, I dodged (oh, a nice play on words), I weaved (outta the way of that ford) but to no avail. Turn back now. It's your last chance. <br>Seriously, congrats. Gauges, Gauges. You got a stick. You will want to monitor your fuel pressure, therefore a fuel pressure gauge. You need to know how hot your exhaust system is working, therefore an EGT gauge is necessary. After that, it becomes a matter of what you want your truck to do. The salient guestion is "how deep are your pockets?"<br><br>Welcome to the site that will lead you down the path, but with a smile. Watch out for a guy by the name of Hoss. He doesn't hang out on the important boards. But he does like noobies, but not in a kind way. <br><br>~Dave 8) 8) 8)<br><br>By the way, DD2's are an upgrade of your injector system. They do wonders for your truck. Since you don't have an automatic, you have fewer problems to concern yourself with before starting the power upgrades. Gauges first, then Edge Comp with some DD's tossed in for good measure. But, remember, Ol' Dave was the first to warn you. Turn away now, before it's too late.

Who, me?? Not me!! Heck, I was just up to DTT yesterday getting another part for my truck. He's got a stick, I've got an Auto. He's gonna be closer to the POWER than me, sooner. Me, jealous?? Not likely. ;D ;D<br><br>~Dave

Well today I added a K&N air filter and a complete 4" straight pipe exhaust sytem from the turbo back. It is noticably better but I am looking for more. What is the deal with the chips or programmers. Which ones are good?

Get gauges first. Get gauges first. Get gauges first. OK? (Pyro, fuel pressure & boost).
Get the Edge Comp. Do not hook up the pump wire unless you want to change the clutch out for a stronger one from SBC, and unless you don't care about stressing the VP44 from time to time. (But later on, you might want to.) Get high performance injectors. Get RV275's if you want to save your clutch and/or keep your truck for a long time. If you want to get the SBC clutch in the next couple of months, and cut the life of your engine from 1 million miles to maybe 300,000 miles, get the DD2's or even the DD3's.
(Durability depends more on your own willpower not to shove your foot into it; the DD's & Comp with pump wire attached will give you the ability to toast things quickly, if you want to. Nobody has the willpower to avoid shoving a foot into it. Nobody. Not you, not even me.)
Sorry, get rid of the K&N and the stock airbox. Get a Scotty II, or if you can't afford it, a BHAF.
Look into getting an aftermarket turbo. HX35's or HX40's from Piers, depending on whether you want to snort safely and last awhile, or achieve warp speed and glory.
Others will tell you I'm nuts. Don't listen to them. ;D Decide for yourself whether you want to keep the truck a long, long time, or whether you want a big rush for a shorter time. Then go for it.

You've gotten some good advice, especially on the gauge front: pyro, boost, fuel pressure.<br><br>If you want to take an initial dip into the power pool, an Edge EZ is a good first step. Easy 50-60 ponies, and if you decide you want more, then you can always sell it. Another good first step is the TST PowerMax1, but you do have to clip into the injection pump wire, which will immediately void your injection pump warranty. The nice thing about PM1 is that it can be upgraded for $100 later on to a fully adjustable, 120 HP box.<br><br>With your stock clutch, as GP noted, 80 - 100 HP is all you can throw at it. This means an Edge EZ (or PM1) and RV275 injectors. Another route is a PowerMax2, which is an 80 HP box.<br><br>And snoop around this site. Alot of good folks here, and plenty of good advice.<br><br>Rod

Pack up the PC, stick it in the truck, and run it off a cliff! Ohh yeah, and put your credit cards in the truck as well! Stay far away from here!! ;D<br><br>Where's that 12 step program??? ;D<br><br>Tony
