More than likely they kept all your internals and just replaced the block. This is what they did with mine. The only new part is the block.

Go fairly easy on it for 5-10,000 thousand miles(no sustained hard runs but easier short bursts more often), then work the heck out of it by towing something fairly heavy. Don't lug, don't rev too high, and don't stay at hi speed for too long. Also keep idling down to a bare minimum. Doing all of these things will seat rings into block better, and you'll have better power, less oil burning, and a more efficient longer lasting engine.

Worst thing you can do to the engine is babying it too much. Change oil at 2000 miles to get rid of contaminants from rebuild. Hope this helps.

OK , my question is why not rev it to high, or why no sustain hard runs.

I agree ..at the factory they start them up idle for so 2-3 min go right to torq. peak full load 100% throttle for 10-15 min ,then to rated full load and 100% throttle 10-15 min and high Idle... I believe thats less than 5-10,000 mi. Chris

There is no breakin on a Cummins. Cummins only recommends to take it easy for the first 100 miles to seat the rings. No ideling though, not over five minutes.

From service manual:

"Engine Run-in Without Dynamometer

On Highway applications

Operate the engine at 1500 to 1800 rpm in high gear for the first 80 to 160 km (50 to 100 mile) after rebuild.

Note: do not idle the engine for more than 5 minutes at any one time during the first 160km (100 mile) of operation."
