"New" (to me) 2001 and have some questions

I just bought a 2001 3500 AT that is in my signature and I have some questions I thought ya'll could maybe lend me a hand with> First off it is after all the mods I've done to my 91' I can't stand this stock stuff very long! The first thing I want to do is disconnect the wastegate because it seems to kill me once boost builds up it feels like I am letting off the throttle. I disconnected the wastegate on my 91's hybrid but it was just a rubber hose it looks like on this truck the line is metal, would pinching it shut work or cut it and put a screw in it?

Next question, what is the best programmer/box/anything stacked with anything for the dollar? I have been reading around on here a little and to say the least I am a little confused with this 24v computer stuff. I do tow 95% of the time heavily and don't want to burn up the transmission right now I know that down the road I will need to upgrade it to handle real power, but as for now is there anything I can do to get some more power without killing my transmission? As far as guages I don't have any yet but they are on the list of things I need before any real modding begins.

One last question, can I fit 285/75/16's on a dually without having clearance problems with the duals or will I need spacers, and how much trouble would it be to squeeze 315's on it, aside from a front leveling kit.

Thanks in advance
Chris

You are gonna wanta put on a "J" hook for that wastegate. BD diesel and other places sell them. I've also seen them on EBay.

I have a 01 3500 also like you mention and I tow daily this is what I got 1) "smarty" to remove torque managment and boost fool 2) rv 275 injectors 3) Dave Goerend triple disk convertor 900 400 4) tst J hook 5) aem workhorse air intake cleaner --- these mods all came with trial and error of other boxs and tuners also note that as soon as I put the rv 275s in lock up would not hold up anymore so a good convertor goes hand in hand with the mods I am not going to say its the best dang thing out there, but I am very pleased with my towing machine

235 loaded or 255 unloaded is as wide a tire you can run without a spacer.

Looks like a good recommendation by cstroup. Only thing he didn't list is a fuel system upgrade.

Thanks for the idea about the J-hook, I did a search and found the turnbuckle way, a couple dollars later and the wastegate problem is solved, I might do the J-hook down the road when I get a programmer in case it overspools the turbo.

How much power does the smarty give, and what can my stock tranny take, if anything more than stock at all?

Where could I find spacers for my duals and how thick
would they need to be for 285's?

How do I know if my truck is an H.O. or not, and what is the difference?

Thanks
Chris

Smarty is an excellent way to go, in fact it'll make enough power to fry that stock tranny in no time at all.

ok so i have a 01 with the hy 35 turbo its the same one you have. the thing with this turbo thats sucks is you cant do much with them.your best bet is to sell the stock turbo buy a hx 35/40 hybrid and get an edge box and a smarty. but if you do the smarty make sure you upgrade the tranny with a valve body and torque converter. dont pinch the hard line on the stock turbo!!!

I would do gauges before anything else. If you cannot afford them then at the very least get a FP gauge. Or the Juice w/ Attitude.
Your gonna need a good VB & TC, mine slipped just with an EZ.
I'm running the 235 85R 16 tires kinda small but work for me.

The HO is with the 6 speed only. Have herd of people that ordered it with a 5 speed. IMO the auto tranny needs some help before you start adding power, if your going to be towing all the time. You haven't said how much # your towing, might look into getting a HX turbo to get a little more air.

Edge Juice w/attitude provides the power (I think its 125hp) and all the gauges... easily the best bang for your buck!!! Then you'll need to upgrade your fuel system and Tranny ASAP!

I tow 10-12k 4-5 days a week.

Gauges are definitly going to be first before anything else, and by the sounds of it something for the tranny. As far as which programmer or box to go with, I want something that down the road if I upgrade injectors or the turbo ect, I won't have to get a different one. Would a torque converter and a valve body make my tranny strong enough to hold some power or will it just delay problems and I'll still need a whole new one like a DTT or Georend ect... down the road?

Also I have heard of people putting switches to manually lock thier torque converter anybody have a link for that?

Thanks for all the replies
Chris
