New Holset specs? Info-Opinions
Hi all. so I'm doing factory training on the new Detroit DD15s at work and looking at the turbo on it looks like it'd be GREAT as a performance single. now i don't have any specific specs on it but maybe HOHN has some Holset info availiable??? any technical data or opinions on it? For the employee price i can get it at I might have to try it out anyways!!

I put in 4049667 for a PN and didn't get any hits. That pic is fuzzy, and I think I may have the PN wrong.
There's a sticker on top of the identification plate. If you peeled off the sticker and gave me a clear shot of the identa-plate with the REAL part number on it, then I might be able to get somewhere.
Since it's on a 15L engine in with a newer emissions recipe, I'm almost certain that would be an HE451, as used on the ISX/ISM.

Then again, maybe it's not an HE451. I'm not sure the '451 is compatible with that fancy "turbocompounding" (a feature Cummins first demonstrated in the 1970s haha).

..........but DD was still stuck on 2 stroke at that time this is waaay advanced for DD even got DDEC VI control
but sorry about the ID tag blur. it was this my cell phone cam i didn't think it was that bad. I'll get it tommorrow.
not bad though I think for a non-wastegate non VGT turbo. looks like a good size

It is in fact an HX55.........I pulled the sticker back off the Holset label. is says HX55 right on it.

While searching on here I keep reading over and over that HX55 is "old" technology yada yada..... has huge turbine housing yada yada.........laggy yada yada.
but by the looks of this brand new one, it looks like a much tighter housing than you would think. while having a larger compressor wheel (~aprx 2.75" )
I have an HT4C in the garage and a HX40 and it appears to size up nicely between those 2.

Yes, it's an HX55.
NO, I couldn't find a shred of dimensional data on it. I can pull prints all day long for engine parts, but turbo parts I have no access. I can tell you what the PNs are for the wheels, hsgs, and all that-- but not what they measure.
Keep in mind that just because something is an "HX55" model, doesn't necessarily mean that it's old tech. The wheels are constantly evolving, constantly getting better.

I tried talking to my friend about that turbo, and this is what he said;
"It's a Holset HX55 turbo. I have the models and prints for it, but I'm not going to give it to anyone.
If you want something general let me know what you are looking for."
I can ask him some general questions if you have any and see what I can get out of him,lol

its no conspiracy theory you can tell him I'm not a spy
just general physical specs......like volume of exhaust housing. 12cm3 16cm3....turbine size compressor size. just the details a guy likes to know when searching any aftermarket turbo. like "66/71/14" or 62/74/16....you know what I mean. and mount flange size? T-4 T-5 or whatever it is?
I'm not after any trade secrets. Just tell him I'm a stupid mechanic that works for Waterous Detroit Diesel Allison. and saw the turbo on an '08 Western Star DD15 and thought to himself.......wonder if that turbo will work on my hotrod 12valve.
it is only a 4" exhaust discharge hole too. to keep exhaust velocity up to the Axial power turbine I imagine. but again that works for my exhaust downtube too.

How does the turbine housing adjust its internal area? I have a 4088 VNT that uses guide vanes to adjust the exhaust flow path into the turbine. Its uses a 12v solenoid and oil pressure to move the vanes.
